Job Description

NBCUniversal has an opening for a Sr Video Transmission Engineer on the Global Distribution Engineering team. The Engineer will be part of a team responsible for supporting and maintaining the Dry Creek Network Operations Center (NOC) as well as Local Station Master Control Origination and Distribution environments, including rapid response to on-air and other business-critical issues. This role supports critical broadcast, transmission, monitoring, automation, and distribution infrastructure across NBCUniversal distribution and local station operations.

Responsibilities include:

· Support and maintain the Dry Creek NOC infrastructure and associated monitoring, transmission, and distribution systems.

· Support Local Station Master Control Origination and Distribution platforms, ensuring reliable delivery of programming and associated services.

· Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues affecting local station origination, transmission, contribution, and distribution workflows.

· Coordinate with Local Station Engineering, Operations, Distribution, and vendor teams to resolve service-impacting issues and implement system enhancements.

· Participate in an on-call rotation and provide after-hours support for critical incidents and broadcast emergencies.

· Respond to outage calls from the operations team and lead the initial response to technical issues.

· Create procedural documentation.

· Work with internal and external subject matter experts and vendors to resolve problems.

· Implement software upgrades and system expansions.

· Analyze and solve problems in software (on-prem / cloud) and hardware-based systems.

· Perform performance analysis and general system health checks across various technologies.

· Perform periodic maintenance procedures and proactive preventive maintenance actions.

· Develop the skills to become a subject matter expert for a collection of technologies within and across facilities.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

· BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience.

· 5+ years of support experience in a live on-air environment.

· Ability to mentor and develop technology professionals.

· Ability to effectively manage change.

· Customer-focused, with a full understanding of the on-air environment.

· Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex systems.

· Demonstrated ability to effectively apply SDI, IP, and transport stream test equipment and analysis tools.

· Demonstrated ability to document complex systems and processes, including the development of maintenance and change procedures.

· Ability to communicate processes and requirements to peers and off-site resources, including personnel at remote NBCUniversal sites, stations, and vendors.

· Effective interpersonal skills.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Customer-focused and forward-thinking.

· Knowledge in the following areas:

· Advanced broadcast automation experience with platforms such as Snell, Grass Valley, or Pebble.

· Video transmission and compression formats and systems, including, but not limited to, SDI, ASI, JPEG XS, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and SMPTE ST 2110.

· Video stream metadata, including, but not limited to, DTMF triggers, timecode user bits, SCTE-35 and SCTE-104 triggers, closed captioning, and Nielsen watermarking.

· Automation and control signaling protocols and systems, including, but not limited to, serial, GPIO, VGPI, and SNMP.

· Proprietary monitoring and control systems, preferably Evertz VistaLINK and Grass Valley iControl.

· Enterprise computing infrastructure, including enterprise servers, client-server platforms, storage devices and systems, hardware, and software, as applied to provisioning, management, storage, operation, scheduling, support, and maintenance.

· Desktop, server, and virtual machine technology.

· Storage technology, including SAN, NAS, RAID, and cloud storage.

· SDI and IP video routing systems and their control, preferably Grass Valley nVision and Evertz EQX, EXE, SDVN, and Magnum.

Desired Characteristics:

· Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.

· VMware VCA/VCP certification.

The ideal candidate would have experience with the following technologies:

· IP networking and multicasting.

· Streaming media protocols, including RTP, RTSP, and UDP.

· Virtualization technologies such as VMware ESXi.

· Video server systems, including Grass Valley ICE and DVS.

· Cloud based master control systems such as Amagi CLOUDPORT.

· Transmission encoding and decoding systems from MediaKind.

· Management and control software, including VistaLINK, iControl, and Convergent.

· Basic and advanced test equipment, such as waveform monitors and transport stream analyzers.

Additional Requirements:

· Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time. 

· Must have flexibility regarding schedule, including participation in an on-call rotation and availability after hours for emergencies.
