What is computer aided engineering (CAE)?

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) refers to the use of computer software to assist in engineering analysis tasks. It encompasses simulation, validation, and optimization of products and manufacturing tools. CAE tools are widely used for tasks such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and multibody dynamics (MBD). These tools help engineers improve product designs, reduce prototyping costs, and shorten development cycles by predicting how products will behave in real-world conditions.

What are some common challenges faced by computer aided engineering (CAE) professionals when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Computer Aided Engineering professionals often collaborate with teams from various engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering. One common challenge is ensuring seamless data integration and communication across different software platforms and engineering teams. Additionally, balancing accuracy and speed in simulations while meeting tight project deadlines can be demanding. To succeed, CAE professionals must be adaptable, proactive in problem-solving, and effective communicators who can translate complex simulation results for diverse stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided engineering (CAE) engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually supported by a relevant degree such as mechanical or aerospace engineering. Proficiency in CAE software tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, or SolidWorks Simulation, and knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python or MATLAB), are typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure accurate simulations, effective analysis, and successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusSimulation, analysis, and optimization of engineering products using software toolsDesigning and developing mechanical components and systems
Tools & SoftwareCAE software like ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks SimulationCAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA
Work EnvironmentEngineering analysis labs, simulation centers, R&D departmentsDesign studios, manufacturing plants, product development teams
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in CAE softwareMechanical engineering degrees, CAD certifications

Computer Aided Engineering focuses on analyzing and optimizing designs through simulation, while Mechanical Design Engineers create the actual mechanical components and systems. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of product development.

Is computer aided engineering a good career?

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) is a specialized field that involves using software tools to analyze and optimize product designs, often requiring skills in CAD, FEA, and simulation. It offers opportunities in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, with a demand for technical expertise and certifications. Overall, it can be a stable and rewarding career for those interested in engineering and technology.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
About the Role
As an NX Cad Admin / Triage support at Anduril, you will be instrumental in establishing, maintaining, and optimizing the Siemens NX CAD environment that powers our engineering and manufacturing teams. You will support the organization and its users on the day to day activities by working side-by-side with all of our users to support their needs, ensuring that designers and engineers have reliable, performant, and standardized tools to rapidly innovate. Your expertise will directly contribute to our ability to design, iterate, and deliver cutting-edge defense solutions at speed and scale.
What You'll Do
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and optimize the Siemens NX CAD environment, including templates, customization files, role-based configurations, and default settings across the organization.
  • Provide specialized technical support for CAD software applications used by our design and engineering teams (e.g., [NX, SolidWorks]).
  • Manage the incoming IT helpdesk queue [e.g., Jira Service Desk], ensuring tickets are triaged, categorized, and assigned correctly.
  • Resolve Tier 1 and Tier 2 technical support tickets related to CAD/PLM software issues.
  • Meet or exceed established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for ticket response and resolution times.
  • Onboard new hires by setting up CAD-capable workstations, user accounts, and software permissions.
  • Create, organize, and maintain user-facing self-service documentation and internal IT knowledge base articles.
  • Provide technical leadership and structured training to engineering and design teams; mentor less experienced users and serve as the primary point of escalation for NX-related issues.
  • Coordinate configuration and improvement projects with engineering, manufacturing, IT, quality, and Siemens/external service providers; act as the technical point of contact for significant CAD/PLM issues.
  • Lead or champion reliability, capability, and continuous improvement projects related to the CAD/PLM environment; quantify benefits, document outcomes, and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Ensure CAD configuration activities comply with site security, quality, and regulatory standards; assess and mitigate operational and data-security risks related to the engineering toolset.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Drafting/Design, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of experience in an IT helpdesk/technical support role.
  • CAD Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of experience supporting or directly using CAD platforms (NX, SolidWorks) in a professional environment.
  • Working knowledge interpreting NX Logs/Sys Logs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills with a methodical approach to diagnosing complex software conflicts.
  • Communication: Ability to explain complex technical issues to both highly technical engineers and non-technical staff.
  • Customer Service: A patient, empathetic, and helpful attitude toward end-users under tight deadlines.
  • Organization: Strong multitasking skills to manage a high volume of tickets while prioritizing critical CAD-stoppage issues.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience administering Teamcenter PLM, including workflow, BOM, and access configuration.
  • Multi-skilled experience administering and configuring Siemens NX with advanced troubleshooting capability across CAD, CAM, and CAE environments.
  • Experience configuring NX templates, customization files, role-based settings, and standardized environments for multi-user deployments.
  • Capable of obtaining U.S. Secret security clearance
