What is the difference between Computer Aided Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusSimulation, analysis, and optimization of engineering products using software toolsDesigning and developing mechanical components and systems
Tools & SoftwareCAE software like ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks SimulationCAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA
Work EnvironmentEngineering analysis labs, simulation centers, R&D departmentsDesign studios, manufacturing plants, product development teams
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in CAE softwareMechanical engineering degrees, CAD certifications

Computer Aided Engineering focuses on analyzing and optimizing designs through simulation, while Mechanical Design Engineers create the actual mechanical components and systems. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of product development.

What are some common challenges faced by Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) professionals when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Computer Aided Engineering professionals often collaborate with teams from various engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering. One common challenge is ensuring seamless data integration and communication across different software platforms and engineering teams. Additionally, balancing accuracy and speed in simulations while meeting tight project deadlines can be demanding. To succeed, CAE professionals must be adaptable, proactive in problem-solving, and effective communicators who can translate complex simulation results for diverse stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually supported by a relevant degree such as mechanical or aerospace engineering. Proficiency in CAE software tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, or SolidWorks Simulation, and knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python or MATLAB), are typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure accurate simulations, effective analysis, and successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What is computer aided engineering (CAE)?

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) refers to the use of computer software to assist in engineering analysis tasks. It encompasses simulation, validation, and optimization of products and manufacturing tools. CAE tools are widely used for tasks such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and multibody dynamics (MBD). These tools help engineers improve product designs, reduce prototyping costs, and shorten development cycles by predicting how products will behave in real-world conditions.

Job description

A globally leading consumer device company headquartered in Cupertino, CA is seeking a CAD Engineer to join their team!

Job Responsibilities:

  • Drive the end-to-end CAD file lifecycle for additive manufacturing operations. Serve as the central hub for all 3D printing design files, utilizing Siemens NX and Teamcenter to securely download, open, review, and upload highly sensitive CAD models.
  • Work closely with product design (PD) engineering teams to interpret specific engineering requests and generate accurate, robust CAD files. Ensure seamless file transfer, strict version control, and flawless CAD execution across various engineering platforms.
  • Provide design for additive manufacturing (DFAM) feedback to cross-functional teams, identifying potential challenges such as overhangs, tolerances, and structural integrity before printing begins.
  • Maintain and resolve issues lists related to file integrity and CAD geometry. Coordinate these activities with overseas counterparts and internal teams to push process capability, ensure timely completion of deliverables, and mitigate risk ahead of schedule. Present detailed analysis to key decision-makers to enable commercial and design decisions.
  • Maintain knowledge of additive manufacturing equipment capabilities and key process drivers; keep abreast of the latest 3D printing developments and leverage new technologies in novel ways to enable improved design capabilities.

Key Qualifications:

  • Strong grasp of CAD software, specifically **Siemens NX**, with expertise in reviewing, creating, and modifying mechanical components and complex assemblies.
  • Proficiency in secure file transferring methods and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), specifically utilizing **Teamcenter** to reliably download, open, review, and upload CAD files across engineering platforms.
  • Ability to accurately translate concepts and requests from real product design engineers into robust, manufacturable CAD files.
  • Deep understanding of additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies, along with the unique design challenges they present.
  • Ability to reconcile DFAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) feedback with design goals, anticipate printability challenges, and provide actionable feedback to a larger team of manufacturing and product engineers.
  • Equivalent practical experience is fully acceptable and welcomed. A BS in engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, industrial design, or a related field) is helpful, but not required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with metal 3D printing and metal additive manufacturing processes (such as DMLS, SLM, or Binder Jetting).
  • Experience working in a fast-paced product development or mass production environment.

Type: Contract

Duration: 6 months with extension

Work Location: Cupertino, CA (onsite)

Pay range: $ 45.00 - $ 60.00 (DOE)
