Computer Aided Design information

What is computer aided design (CAD)?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) refers to the use of computer software to create, modify, analyze, or optimize a design. CAD is widely used by engineers, architects, and designers to produce precise technical drawings and 3D models. It streamlines the design process, enhances productivity, and allows for easy revisions and detailed documentation. CAD software can be used for a range of applications, including architecture, mechanical engineering, product design, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer, you need strong spatial reasoning, technical drawing abilities, and a background in engineering, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and sometimes certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting project requirements. These abilities are essential for producing accurate, efficient designs that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What are some typical challenges faced by computer aided design (CAD) professionals in collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams?

CAD professionals often work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure that digital designs translate effectively into real-world products. A common challenge is maintaining clear communication to address design changes, manufacturability concerns, and technical specifications. CAD specialists must balance precision with adaptability, frequently updating models based on feedback while ensuring all documentation is current. Successful collaboration requires strong attention to detail, an understanding of technical requirements, and the ability to use project management tools to track revisions.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design vs Drafting Technician?

AspectComputer Aided DesignDrafting Technician
CredentialsCAD certifications, technical degreesAssociate degree or diploma in drafting or engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturingArchitectural, engineering, or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageDesign and product developmentCreating technical drawings and plans
Primary FocusCreating detailed 3D models and designsProducing precise 2D drawings and schematics

Computer Aided Design (CAD) professionals focus on creating detailed 3D models and designs using specialized software, often involved in product development and engineering. Drafting Technicians primarily produce technical 2D drawings and schematics based on engineers' or designers' concepts. While both roles require technical skills and familiarity with drafting tools, CAD specialists typically handle complex modeling, whereas Drafting Technicians focus on precise technical documentation.

Is computer-aided design a good career?

Computer-aided design (CAD) is a viable career that involves creating technical drawings and models using specialized software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. It requires technical skills, attention to detail, and often a relevant degree or certification; job prospects are strong in industries such as engineering, architecture, and manufacturing.

What jobs can you do with computer-aided design?

Computer-aided design (CAD) skills open opportunities in fields such as architecture, engineering, product design, and manufacturing. Common roles include CAD technician, design engineer, architectural drafter, and mechanical designer, often requiring proficiency with CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. These jobs typically involve creating detailed technical drawings and models for construction, manufacturing, or product development.

Job description

HTM Group - HTM Contractors, Inc.

CAD Design Manager

Location: Honolulu, HI -- On-site

Turn Complex Requirements into Field-Ready Plans.

HTM Contractors, Inc. is part of a growing Hawaii-based group of construction, environmental, manufacturing, demolition, equipment, and specialty-service companies. Our teams rely on accurate plans, organized permitting, and practical designs that can be executed successfully in the field.

We are seeking a CAD Design Manager to oversee the creation of professional construction, demolition, fabrication, and modification drawings. This position will be responsible for producing complete design packages, managing permitting submissions and corrections, enforcing drafting standards, and coordinating with Project Managers, Operations, engineers, architects, consultants, and government agencies. The successful candidate will combine advanced technical drafting skills with strong project tracking, quality control, and process-improvement abilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce professional CAD drawings and complete design packages.
  • Prepare demolition and construction plan sets.
  • Develop manufacturing modification and fabrication drawings for the company's HIWASTE division.
  • Create accurate, permit-ready application packages.
  • Submit permit packages to the Department of Planning and Permitting and other applicable agencies.
  • Track permit status daily and manage agency correction cycles.
  • Communicate directly with permitting agencies when clarification or follow-up is required.
  • Revise drawings based on internal reviews, agency comments, consultant feedback, and stamped revisions.
  • Verify that final plans are accurate, constructible, and ready for field use.
  • Establish and enforce company drawing standards, templates, naming conventions, and documentation procedures.
  • Archive approved permits and maintain complete, organized project records.
  • Prioritize drafting and permitting work across multiple active projects.
  • Maintain an accurate project tracker and communicate schedule risks or delays proactively.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Operations teams, structural engineers, architects, and consultants.
  • Identify workflow improvements that reduce errors, rework, and turnaround time.
  • Support research, development, and special design initiatives as assigned.
  • Review the work of other drafting or design personnel as the department grows.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Architecture, or a related field.
  • At least five years of relevant drafting, design, construction-document, or permitting experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Revit proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce complete, permit-ready construction and demolition plan sets.
  • Experience creating fabrication or modification drawings in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of permitting processes, agency submissions, correction cycles, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, architects, consultants, Project Managers, and Operations teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  • Strong drawing-review, revision-control, and quality-assurance skills.
  • Ability to establish and enforce drafting standards.
  • Process-oriented mindset focused on accuracy, efficiency, and reducing rework.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and project-tracking abilities.
  • Humble, team-oriented, accountable, and solution-driven approach.

Pay and Benefits

  • Full-time, W-2 Employment
  • Pay: $95,000 - $105,000 per year, based on experience
  • Weekly pay
  • Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
  • Medical and dental insurance paid 100% by the company for the employee and full family
  • Benefits begin after four weeks of full-time employment.
  • 160 hours of paid time off annually
  • 10 paid holidays
  • Paid birthday after one year
  • $10,000 in company-paid life insurance
  • MetLife benefits
  • Profit-sharing opportunities
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 4% after one year

Why HTM Contractors?

This role offers the opportunity to create the design and permitting systems that support a growing group of Hawaii companies. Your work will move beyond producing drawings--you will improve standards, strengthen coordination, reduce errors, and help projects reach the field faster. You will work directly with operational and project leaders who value practical solutions and measurable improvement. For an experienced CAD professional who wants ownership and influence, this is an opportunity to build something lasting.

HTM Group encourages applications from qualified candidates of all backgrounds and experiences.
