What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer, you need strong spatial reasoning, technical drawing abilities, and a background in engineering, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and sometimes certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting project requirements. These abilities are essential for producing accurate, efficient designs that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design vs Drafting Technician?

AspectComputer Aided DesignDrafting Technician
CredentialsCAD certifications, technical degreesAssociate degree or diploma in drafting or engineering technology
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturingArchitectural, engineering, or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageDesign and product developmentCreating technical drawings and plans
Primary FocusCreating detailed 3D models and designsProducing precise 2D drawings and schematics

Computer Aided Design (CAD) professionals focus on creating detailed 3D models and designs using specialized software, often involved in product development and engineering. Drafting Technicians primarily produce technical 2D drawings and schematics based on engineers' or designers' concepts. While both roles require technical skills and familiarity with drafting tools, CAD specialists typically handle complex modeling, whereas Drafting Technicians focus on precise technical documentation.

What is the definition of a computer?

A computer is an electronic device that processes data according to programmed instructions, enabling tasks such as design, analysis, and modeling in computer-aided design (CAD). CAD professionals use computers with specialized software to create precise technical drawings and 3D models. Understanding computer hardware and software is essential for CAD work environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Computer Aided Design (CAD) professionals in collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams?

CAD professionals often work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure that digital designs translate effectively into real-world products. A common challenge is maintaining clear communication to address design changes, manufacturability concerns, and technical specifications. CAD specialists must balance precision with adaptability, frequently updating models based on feedback while ensuring all documentation is current. Successful collaboration requires strong attention to detail, an understanding of technical requirements, and the ability to use project management tools to track revisions.

What is a good inexpensive computer to buy?

For a Computer Aided Design (CAD) professional, an inexpensive computer suitable for CAD work should have a dedicated graphics card, at least 8GB of RAM, and a fast multi-core processor. Budget-friendly options include mid-range laptops or desktops from brands like Dell, HP, or Lenovo that meet these specifications, often with integrated or entry-level dedicated GPUs. Ensuring the system supports CAD software requirements and has sufficient storage is also important for efficient workflow.

Is it better to shut down or sleep?

For a Computer Aided Design (CAD) professional, shutting down a computer completely ensures all files are saved and reduces power consumption, which is useful after long work sessions. Sleep mode allows quick resume and is suitable for short breaks, but it consumes more power and may risk data loss if power is interrupted. Choosing between the two depends on the duration of inactivity and energy efficiency needs.

What is Computer Aided Design (CAD)?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) refers to the use of computer software to create, modify, analyze, or optimize a design. CAD is widely used by engineers, architects, and designers to produce precise technical drawings and 3D models. It streamlines the design process, enhances productivity, and allows for easy revisions and detailed documentation. CAD software can be used for a range of applications, including architecture, mechanical engineering, product design, and more.

What is the best home computer to buy?

For a Computer Aided Design (CAD) professional, a high-performance desktop or laptop with a powerful multi-core processor, at least 16GB of RAM, a dedicated graphics card such as NVIDIA Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro, and a high-resolution display are recommended to handle complex modeling and rendering tasks efficiently.

Reframe Systems

Andover, MA โ€ข On-site

$27.25 - $37.75/hr

Full-time

Posted 21 days ago

Job description

About Us
Reframe Systems is on a mission to build net-zero carbon housing for all, at massive scale. To achieve our mission, we need to make net-zero carbon housing more affordable and we are re-imagining how housing is designed and built. Our volumetric module platform and highly-automated production system will drive down cost, delivery time, and embodied carbon for multifamily housing. We are setting up our first digital factory in the greater Boston area (Andover, MA), and have a roadmap to scale our presence nationally. We are disrupting assembly line manufacturing for housing production and are backed by leading VC firms in the industrial and construction space.
What We're Looking For
We are looking to transform the AEC design process to support our novel production system. This means creating designs that are far more detailed than traditional AEC workflows dictate, augmenting CAD workflows with advanced scripting and automated design logic, and generating many supporting assets to aid manufacturing and analysis. We are looking for a problem-solving self-starter who likes a challenge and thrives in a multidisciplinary environment.
We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Modeler to join our dynamic architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) team. The CAD Modeler will play a crucial role in transforming conceptual designs for residential and low-rise mulit-family buildings into precise, detailed 3D models. This role requires a strong command in mechanical CAD software such as Catia, Creo, Onshape or Solidworks, with deep working knowledge of creating and updating models; a keen eye for accuracy; and a deep understanding of 3D model management. Ideally, the candidate has worked with the scripting capabilities of their CAD system and has a developed understanding of the challenges of automating design.
The CAD modeler will work closely with architects, designers, and engineers in a collaborative and creative work environment.
The position reports to the Head of Building Products. The position is full-time, salaried, exempt.
Responsibilities
  • CAD Modeling and Detailing: Create detailed 3D CAD models using world-class mechanical parametric CAD systems. Collaborate with architects and designers to convert design concepts into high-fidelity 3D CAD models.
  • CAD Management: Organize and maintain 3D models, files and documentation, including revisions, ensuring that the latest versions are readily accessible to team members. Manage and update CAD models, families, and templates.
  • Model Coordination: Work closely with other CAD modelers (external partners) to coordinate on the CAD models, perform clash detection, and ensure effective change management.
  • Quality Assurance: Review 3D models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project standards and regulations. Make revisions as necessary to address design changes or discrepancies.
  • Manufacturing Drawing Preparation: Work with other CAD modelers (external partners) to generate 3D details of structural, MEPF and other systems, ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with other CAD modelers, architects, project managers, and other team members to meet project deadlines and objectives.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a CAD Modeler is required for this role.
  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering field is required. Background in the construction industry is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CATIA, Onshape, or Solidworks to create, manage, and update 3D CAD models. Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor and Revit is a strong plus.
  • Prior experience in CAD modeling is required.
  • Ability to quickly pick up a wide variety of CAD software plugins.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate and precise 3D models.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing project requirements.

Please include a portfolio of works highlighting key projects where your CAD Modeler role included model management, CAD modeling, and detailing.
At this time, we are only considering candidates who are authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for current or future visa sponsorship.
