Job description

Assistant Technical Director

As an assistant technical director at SCAD, the only university with an on-site, professionally run casting office, you'll manage shop workflow, supervise all full-time production shop staff, and oversee the work-study student program. You'll play a critical role in ensuring that spaces are ready for students to star in animated shorts, multicamera sitcoms, TV pilots, films, and virtual reality (VR).

To support SCAD's deep professional focus and industry connections, you will:
Directly manage daily scene shop operations to keep projects on schedule and meet quality standards as well as solve operational issues
Receive weekly priorities from the technical director and manage daily task assignments and completion
Direct technicians and staff during scenery build, load-in, note calls, and strike
Manage equipment and tool maintenance, organization, and materials inventory
Maintain shop safety standards and OSHA compliance

As part of the production design team, you will:
Foster a collaborative, safe, and productive work environment
Supervise the head production associate and three production design associates
Assist with hiring and onboarding artisans; lead performance reviews, coaching, and feedback to address concerns; and manage staff schedules and approve time off
Oversee the work-study program (10-20 students), train students on shop safety protocols and procedures, help students develop technical skills and confidence, assign appropriate tasks, and track hours for financial-aid compliance

Additionally, you will:
Communicate daily with the technical director about material and equipment needs and confirm schedule feasibility
Provide production status updates and progress reports
Coordinate with the head production associate on complex builds and technical challenges
Participate in production meetings and planning sessions

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in performing arts technology or equivalent professional experience
Experience with CAD drawing, carpentry, welding, performing arts construction techniques, painting, and rigging
Ability to drive a 16- and 24-foot box trucks for more than five hours per week

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
C-Class Georgia driver's license

Travel required:
Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
