Mechanical Design Engineer (CAD / SolidWorks)

Tucson, Arizona
Salary: Up to $120,000 DOE

Our client, a growing high-technology engineering and manufacturing company, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with strong SolidWorks and 3D CAD expertise to join its engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to design precision mechanical assemblies from concept through production while working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment supporting advanced commercial and government programs.

The ideal candidate is passionate about product development, thrives in a hands-on engineering environment, and enjoys solving complex design challenges using modern CAD tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design precision mechanical assemblies from concept through production using SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
  • Develop detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Create designs that emphasize manufacturability, assembly efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead prototype development, testing, design validation, and transition into production.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, machining vendors, suppliers, and internal engineering teams to ensure successful product launches.
  • Support engineering change requests, drawing revisions, configuration management, and documentation control.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical solutions throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to meet project schedules, quality objectives, and customer requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, product quality, and manufacturing efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing, aerospace, defense, precision instrumentation, or other high-technology environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks strongly preferred; experience with other 3D CAD platforms such as Autodesk Inventor, Creo, NX, or Solid Edge will also be considered.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and engineering drawing standards.
  • Experience with product development, prototyping, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering projects while meeting aggressive schedules.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • U.S. work authorization required. Due to the nature of some projects, qualified candidates must be eligible to work on programs subject to U.S. export control regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing precision mechanical or electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of machining, fabrication, sheet metal, or precision manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM), revision control, and engineering change processes.
  • Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and production launches.
