Job description

Surveyor/CAD Manager
As a Work Planning & Control Manager at C.A. Murren, you will serve as a critical link between engineering, project controls, quality, field operations, and construction execution. You will bring structure, discipline, and technical leadership to complex work, ensuring teams have clear, complete, and executable plans before work begins. In this role, you will help protect our people, the project, and the quality of our work by ensuring requirements are fully understood, properly documented, and carried through from initial planning to field execution and final turnover. You will lead the work planning and control process, identify and resolve planning gaps before they impact construction, and help ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.
C.A. Murren is seeking a Heavy Civil CAD Technician / Drafter to prepare and maintain civil and structural CAD deliverables supporting heavy civil construction, site development, utilities, concrete, underground systems, and as-built turnover. The ideal candidate will be proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, comfortable working with survey and field data, and experienced in controlled construction environments. This person will coordinate closely with Survey, Field Engineering, Work Planning, Construction, Project Management, Quality, and Document Control while ensuring drawings and models remain accurate, current, traceable, and based on approved source information.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and revise 2D drawings and 3D civil models using AutoCAD Civil 3D in accordance with project CAD standards, approved design inputs, document-control requirements, and assigned work priorities.
  • Develop and maintain existing-ground and design surfaces, alignments, profiles, cross sections, corridors, pipe networks, grading models, and related construction exhibits for roads, drainage, utilities, foundations, and site development.
  • Produce grading plans, utility plans and profiles, earthwork exhibits, haul and laydown layouts, concrete and reinforcement details, and other heavy-civil drawings needed by Construction, Field Engineering, Survey, Work Planning, and Quality.
  • Incorporate approved design revisions, RFIs, field-change documents, redlines, and verified survey information while maintaining revision traceability and preventing use of superseded information.
  • Convert survey field data into base mapping, stakeout exhibits, cut/fill information, surface updates, and record drawings using the project coordinate system and approved survey-control information.
  • Prepare and update as-built drawings from verified field records and survey data; identify incomplete, conflicting, or unverified information before incorporation into turnover documentation.
  • Support work packages and field execution with sketches, drawing extracts, overlays, dimensions, quantities, and constructability exhibits derived from controlled source documents.
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, planners, superintendents, quality personnel, subcontractors, and document control to resolve drawing conflicts, missing information, constructability concerns, and field-data discrepancies.
  • Perform disciplined self-checks and peer checks for geometry, coordinates, elevations, slopes, dimensions, layering, annotation, references, and conformance with project drafting standards before issue.
  • Maintain orderly CAD files, templates, blocks, data shortcuts, references, plot standards, naming conventions, revision histories, and backups in the approved project environment.
  • Support quantity takeoffs, progress exhibits, change-order documentation, and turnover packages when requested, clearly distinguishing design information from field-verified record information.
  • Use only current approved drawings, specifications, survey control, work-package inputs, and field-change documents; escalate conflicts before changing controlled deliverables or record drawings.
  • Follow all company and project safety, security, quality, configuration-management, records, and work-control requirements, and seek direction when requested drafting actions exceed approved authority.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate, associate degree, or formal coursework in drafting, civil engineering technology, surveying, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible civil CAD/drafting experience supporting heavy civil, industrial, energy, federal, or comparable construction projects.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with current AutoCAD and Civil 3D functions used for surfaces, alignments, profiles, sections, grading, pipe networks, references, and sheet production.
  • Ability to interpret civil and structural drawings, specifications, survey information, coordinates, elevations, contours, utility data, and construction redlines.
  • Working knowledge of coordinate systems, survey control, field-to-finish data flow, units, tolerances, and the differences among design, construction, and as-built information.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, maintain accurate records, communicate technical issues clearly, and work effectively with field and office personnel in an active construction environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office and PDF-markup tools and the ability to learn project document-control, work-planning, and model-management systems.
  • Experience on highly regulated federal, energy, power, process, industrial, or comparable construction projects involving controlled drawings and formal configuration management is preferred.
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center, GNSS/RTK survey data, total-station files, point clouds, GIS data, or comparable survey-processing tools is preferred.
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, Navisworks, PlanSwift, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar coordination, takeoff, and document-review platforms is preferred.
  • Experience preparing site-development, underground utility, drainage, roadway, earthwork, concrete, reinforcement, or mechanical/electrical civil-interface drawings is preferred.
  • Familiarity with formal quality-assurance work controls, approved work packages, controlled records, and turnover documentation is preferred.

Requirements:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Participation in pre-employment and random drug screening program
  • Subject to background screening
