A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern is a student or entry-level professional who assists engineering or architectural teams by creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings and models using CAD software. Their main responsibilities often include supporting design projects, updating existing drawings, and learning industry standards. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience with design tools and processes, helping prepare interns for full-time roles in engineering, architecture, or related fields.

What do computer aided design interns do?

As a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include creating and modifying 2D or 3D models, preparing technical drawings for engineering or architectural teams, and assisting with design revisions based on feedback. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced designers and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD software. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, with opportunities to contribute to real-world projects, participate in team meetings, and learn about the project lifecycle from concept through production.

Job description

Job Summary

Aleph Group Inc. is seeking an experienced CAD / SolidWorks Designer with a strong background in fabrication and manufacturing. The ideal candidate will be comfortable taking concepts and preliminary layouts and developing them into accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, fabrication drawings, and production-ready documentation.

This position requires practical knowledge of how products are actually built—not just how they are drawn. Experience working directly with fabrication and production teams is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for custom fabrication projects.
  • Create and modify SolidWorks models, assemblies, and fabrication drawings.
  • Develop SketchUp 3D models and layouts for conceptual and production planning.
  • Prepare detailed drawings including dimensions, tolerances, materials, and fabrication requirements.
  • Convert concepts, sketches, measurements, and engineering information into production-ready drawings.
  • Work closely with engineering, project management, and fabrication personnel throughout the design and production process.
  • Revise drawings as required based on field measurements, production requirements, and customer changes.
  • Assist with component layouts, structural framing, cabinetry, equipment placement, and mechanical/electrical coordination.
  • Maintain organized drawing files, revisions, and project documentation.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD/CAD, and SketchUp.
  • Previous experience working in a fabrication, manufacturing, specialty vehicle, architectural metal, or similar production environment.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication methods, materials, dimensions, tolerances, and assembly processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to accurately measure existing components and create drawings/models from those measurements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential fabrication or fitment issues before production.
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with production and engineering personnel.
  • Good organizational and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

Experience with aluminum and steel fabrication, structural framing, custom cabinetry, sheet metal, specialty vehicles, trailers, mobile units, or custom-built equipment is highly desirable.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a hands-on designer who understands fabrication and can effectively bridge the gap between design and production. The successful candidate will be practical, detail-oriented, reliable, and comfortable working directly with our fabrication team to turn designs into finished products.
