What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design engineer designer?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design Engineer Designer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, technical drawing, and proficiency in CAD software, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Expertise in tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with knowledge of industry-specific standards, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding CAD engineers apart when collaborating with teams and interpreting complex design requirements. These skills ensure the accurate creation of technical drawings and models, leading to successful project outcomes and seamless production processes.

How does a computer aided design engineer designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

As a CAD Engineer Designer, collaboration with cross-functional teams is a key part of the job. You’ll regularly interact with engineers, product managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure that designs meet technical requirements and are feasible for production. This often involves participating in design reviews, incorporating feedback, and using CAD software to revise models based on input from colleagues. Effective communication and teamwork skills are essential, as your work forms the foundation for downstream engineering and manufacturing processes.

What is the salary of a computer aided design engineer designer?

The average salary of a computer aided design (CAD) engineer or designer typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks may earn higher salaries, and certifications can also influence compensation.

What is a computer aided design engineer designer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Engineer Designer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and plans for products, machinery, buildings, or other engineering projects. They translate concepts and specifications into digital models, which are used by engineers, architects, and manufacturers to develop and produce various items. CAD Engineer Designers play a crucial role in streamlining the design process, improving accuracy, and facilitating collaboration across teams. Their work helps ensure that projects meet technical, safety, and functional requirements.

What does a computer aided design engineer designer earn?

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, highly versatile Dental CAD/CAM Designer to join our state-of-the-art dental laboratory in Massachusetts.

In this role, you will be a core driver of our digital workflow. We need a skilled designer who excels in high-esthetic full arch and anterior cases, understands the intricacies of multi-platform implant systems, and can manage end-to-end digital production—from surgical planning to nesting, milling, and 3D printing. Must know how to design Surgical guides.

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Esthetic Digital Design: Produce exceptional digital designs using 3Shape Dental System and exocad, specializing in anterior cases, full-mouth reconstructions, and complex high-esthetic full arches.
  • Surgical & Implant Planning: Execute precise surgical guide design and implant planning using coDiagnostiX for both single-unit cases and complex All-on-X restorations.
  • Implant Identification: Utilize deep knowledge of major and minor implant systems to accurately identify components, platforms, and scan bodies from digital workflows.
  • Nesting & Milling: Toolpath, nest, and manage CAM workflows for multi-axis milling machines (zirconia, PMMA, titanium), maintaining high precision and surface finish quality.
  • 3D Printing Operations: Manage digital manufacturing, light processing, nesting, and post-processing for 3D printed surgical guides, models, try-ins, and temporary restorations.
  • Collaboration & Quality Assurance: Review intraoral scans, evaluate margins, and collaborate closely with bench technicians and clinicians to resolve complex case parameters.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven experience as a CAD/CAM Designer in a digital dental lab environment.
  • Software Mastery: Advanced proficiency in 3Shape, exocad, and coDiagnostiX.
  • Implant Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of all major implant systems and the ability to identify components from digital scans.
  • Surgical Guide Expertise: Hands-on experience planning and designing guided surgery for single units up to full-arch All-on-X cases.
  • Technical Production Skills: Hands-on experience with CAM nesting, milling protocols, and 3D printing hardware/software.
  • Anatomical & Esthetic Eye: Strong mastery of natural tooth morphology, smile design, and functional occlusion.
