Computer Aided Design Design information

Is computer-aided design a good career?

Computer-aided design (CAD) is a viable career that involves creating technical drawings and models using specialized software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. It offers opportunities in industries such as engineering, architecture, and manufacturing, often requiring technical skills and certifications. The field can provide steady employment with potential for advancement and specialization.

What jobs can you do with computer-aided design?

Computer-aided design (CAD) skills open opportunities in fields such as architecture, mechanical engineering, product design, and civil engineering. Common roles include CAD technician, design engineer, drafters, and architectural drafter, often requiring proficiency with CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. These jobs typically involve creating detailed technical drawings and models for manufacturing, construction, or product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design vs CAD Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design DesignerCAD Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, engineering, or related fieldOften requires a diploma or certification in CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesArchitectural firms, engineering offices, construction sites
Industry UsageUsed for creating detailed design concepts and prototypesUsed for drafting, preparing technical drawings, and documentation

Computer Aided Design Designers focus on creating detailed design concepts and prototypes, often requiring a degree in design or engineering. CAD Technicians primarily prepare technical drawings and documentation, usually with specialized certifications. Both roles work closely within engineering and architectural industries but serve different stages of the design process.

  • Design and optimize liquid cooling solutions, including Coolant Distribution Modules (CDMs), manifolds, connectors, and cooling loop architectures.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with electrical infrastructure, including power shelves, BBUs, busbars, and related hardware.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation.
  • Validate designs using CFD, FEA, and digital twin simulation workflows.
  • Collaborate with hardware, electrical, and facilities teams to deliver fully integrated infrastructure solutions.
  • Lead design reviews and ensure compliance with OCP, ASHRAE, and EIA standards.
  • Support rapid prototyping using 3D printing and other manufacturing methods.
  • Evaluate mechanical components, materials, and suppliers to meet performance, manufacturability, and reliability requirements.
Required QualificationsTechnical Skills (Must Have)

  • Experience using CFD and FEA tools for thermal and structural validation.
  • Knowledge of data center standards, including OCP, ASHRAE, and EIA.
  • Experience integrating high-power electrical components such as busbars, power shelves, and BBUs into mechanical designs.
  • Experience developing and utilizing system-level digital twin models.
Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in mechanical design for data centers, HPC systems, AI infrastructure, or other high-performance computing environments.
  • Proven experience taking mechanical designs from concept through manufacturing and production deployment.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, thermal validation testing, and iterative design improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with hyperscale data centers or AI computing infrastructure.
  • Background in rack-level thermal optimization or modular cooling systems.
  • Experience with advanced simulation platforms such as Cadence Reality DC, Future Facilities, or similar.
  • Familiarity with BIM/Revit for large-scale infrastructure integration.
Additional Requirements
  • Location:ย Greater Austin, TX (Relocation available).
