What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

Tired of Sitting at a Desk All Day Tracing 2D Blueprints?

If you are a skilled CAD Drafter who feels stuck in a cubicle, micromanaged, or divorced from the actual machinery you design—it is time for a change.

At Sentrimax Centrifuges, we don’t want CAD operators who just push buttons. We are looking for a true mechanical problem-solver. Someone who wants to step onto the shop floor, put their hands on real-world industrial rotating equipment, grab a micrometer, and solve fitment puzzles that keep heavy industry running.

If you know how metal gets cut, love reverse engineering physical parts into clean SolidWorks models, and want to work in an environment where your work directly impacts shop production every single day, let’s talk.

Why Top Drafters Make the Switch to Sentrimax:

  • No Cubicle Confinement: You won't be trapped in a quiet office 40 hours a week. You’ll split your time between your CAD station and the shop floor, measuring actual centrifuge bowls, scrolls, and gearboxes.
  • Master the Art of Reverse Engineering: Go beyond routine drafting. You will measure physical, worn components using precision tools and rebuild them into perfect 3D assemblies and production-ready shop prints.
  • Real Autonomy & Ownership: Work directly alongside experienced machinists, welders, and engineering leadership. You see your drawings turned into physical steel right down the hall.
  • Stability in Heavy Industry: Centrifuges are critical infrastructure for wastewater, energy, and processing industries. We provide steady, year-round work, competitive hourly pay, and reliable overtime opportunities.

What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-Day:

  • Reverse Engineer & Model: Take physical parts off the shop floor, measure them using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and thread pitch gauges, and turn them into robust 3D SolidWorks models.
  • Produce Shop-Ready Drawings: Create detailed 2D manufacturing blueprints, assembly drawings, and BOMs with clear machining tolerances and GD&T callouts.
  • Quality & First-Article Inspection: Perform dimensional inspections on incoming and newly machined parts, catching non-conformances before they hit final assembly.
  • Problem Solve On-Site: Partner directly with machinists and repair technicians to troubleshoot fitments, revise drawings, and improve manufacturability.

What Makes You the Ideal Candidate:

  • Background: Formal technical training/degree in CAD/Drafting Technology OR practical mechanical drafting experience. Machine shop or reverse engineering experience is a major asset.
  • Proven SolidWorks Proficiency: You are fast, accurate, and comfortable managing 3D models, assemblies, and drawing packages (AutoCAD experience is a plus).
  • Hands-on Precision Tool Experience: Proven skill (or strong technical aptitude to master) precision measuring tools including:
    • Micrometers & Vernier Calipers
    • Height gauges & Dial indicators
    • Outer Diameter (OD) ring gauges & Thread lead/profile gauges
  • Machine Shop & GD&T Foundation: You understand machining processes (milling, turning, grinding) and know how tight tolerances and geometric dimensioning apply to real-world fits.
  • Mechanical Mindset: Whether you have a CAD degree, machine shop background, or technical training, your defining trait is a passion for how mechanical things go together.
