What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

Job Summary:
Centrotherm Eco Systems is seeking a Design Engineer II to support mid-level product design and validation for polypropylene venting systems and OEM components. This role translates customer, code, and performance requirements into manufacturable designs and supports products from concept through first article and launch. The Design Engineer II works closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and customers (OEMs, distributors, contractors) to deliver solutions that meet quality, cost, and timeline expectations.
Job duties:
  • Design new products, assemblies, and customer-specific components using Creo, including 3D models, detailed drawings, and related engineering documentation.
  • Translate customer needs and applicable standards into technical requirements; communicate requirements clearly to internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Develop and maintain BOMs, specifications, and supporting documentation (e.g., work instructions, installation instructions, technical documentation as required).
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and standards, including UL-1738, ULC-S636, ANSI Z21, and NFPA 54, and maintain working knowledge of applicable requirements.
  • Apply DFM/DFA and target-cost methodology to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and scalable; incorporate lean thinking and continuous improvement where applicable.
  • Support product application needs such as vent sizing, layouts, configuration guidance, and feasibility/cost analysis for custom requests.
  • Design parts for plastic injection molding, incorporating molding best practices (draft, wall thickness, parting lines, tolerances) and coordinating with suppliers on tooling feedback and design revisions.
  • Design or support development of tooling, jigs, fixtures, and gauges; coordinate fabrication with internal resources or suppliers, including 3D printing when appropriate.
  • Support prototype and first-article builds by partnering with Manufacturing; troubleshoot issues, document learnings, and implement design or process improvements.
  • Create and execute design verification plans, test procedures, and lab documentation; build test setups/fixtures, analyze results, and produce clear reports.
  • Lead or participate in DFMEA/PFMEA activities; support corrective actions and quality improvements based on test results, field feedback, and production performance.
  • Support manufacturing readiness by providing necessary outputs (e.g., DXF files, CNC-related documentation, inspection points, critical dimensions, and process guidance).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Quality, and Product/Engineering to support launches, customer support needs, and ongoing product updates.
  • Mentor or support junior engineers as assigned.
  • Perform other duties, projects, and assignments as needed.

Requirements
Experience and Required Skill:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university.
  • 3-6 years of product design and/or manufacturing engineering experience; plastics, fabrication, or industrial products preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD; Creo required (experience with drawings, assemblies, and BOM structure).
  • Demonstrated ability to create engineering documentation such as work instructions, installation instructions, and technical specifications.
  • Experience with test methods, verification planning, and lab equipment; ability to interpret results and implement improvements.
  • In-depth exposure to UL-1738, ULC-S636, ANSI Z21, and NFPA 54 standards (or ability to learn quickly and apply them).
  • Required: plastic injection molding design experience, including part design for manufacturability and supplier/tooling collaboration.
  • Familiarity with tooling/fixture design and first-article/manufacturing support.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); strong organization and project prioritization skills.
