Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

David Nice Builders is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented CAD Design Engineer for our Millwork Division. In this role, you will leverage Microvellum (AutoCAD-based software) to design and develop custom fixtures for retail and commercial construction projects. You will create precise 2D and 3D models, technical drawings, and CNC-ready designs that meet client specifications and industry standards.
Working closely with project managers, production teams, architects, and clients, the CAD Engineer plays a critical role in translating architectural concepts into high-quality, manufacturable fixtures. This position requires strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to design optimization, production efficiency, and safety.
If you are passionate about precision design and enjoy collaborating across teams to bring custom millwork projects to life, this is an excellent opportunity to join a growing company that values craftsmanship and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain accurate 2D and 3D CAD models and technical drawings using Microvellum and AutoCAD
Create detailed part drawings and assemblies for CNC router programming and millwork production
Interpret architectural plans and engineering specifications, translating them into manufacturing-ready designs
Collaborate with clients, architects, project managers, and production teams to refine designs and resolve technical challenges
Optimize designs for production efficiency, material usage, and fixture performance
Research specialty materials and long-lead items to help prevent project delays
Maintain organized, up-to-date drawing files and documentation
Ensure all designs comply with OSHA regulations and company safety policies
Support project goals and plant operations as directed by the Executive Vice President and Project Manager
What You Bring (Qualifications)
Required:
Proficiency in Microvellum and AutoCAD (strong 2D and 3D modeling skills)
Experience creating detailed technical drawings, part drawings, and assemblies for CNC programming
Ability to interpret architectural blueprints, plans, sections, and engineering specifications
Strong understanding of millwork production workflows and manufacturing processes
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Effective communication and collaboration skills
Commitment to safety and compliance with OSHA standards
Preferred:
Prior experience in custom millwork, retail fixtures, or architectural woodworking
Knowledge of design optimization and material efficiency
Experience working with CNC programmers and production teams
Personal Traits:
You are a dependable, technically skilled team player who takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality designs. You thrive in a collaborative environment, adapt quickly to changing project needs, and are committed to DNB's culture of integrity, craftsmanship, and passionate teamwork.
Why Join DNB?
Work on exciting custom millwork and retail fixture projects for commercial clients
Use industry-leading software (Microvellum) in a modern production environment
Collaborative team that values precision, innovation, and quality
Opportunity to grow with an established and expanding company
Competitive compensation and benefits package
Ready to design something exceptional?
If you are a talented CAD Design Engineer with strong Microvellum and AutoCAD skills who enjoys turning architectural visions into precision-manufactured fixtures, we want to hear from you.
Apply today by submitting your resume and a brief note about your experience with Microvellum or custom millwork design.
David Nice Builders is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
