Hourly Rate: $73.00 per hour plus benefits (medical, dental, vision, PTO, 401k)

Location: Berkeley, California
Work Arrangement: Primarily On-Site
Contract Duration: 1 Year
Project: Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U)

Exciting Opportunity at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

We are seeking an experienced Electrical CAD Designer to provide electrical design and engineering documentation support for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a complex, high-profile scientific and engineering project. The successful candidate will work closely with electrical and mechanical engineers, project managers, manufacturing teams, and other technical personnel to transform engineering concepts into detailed, manufacturable electrical designs and documentation.

The role will support the engineering, manufacturing, assembly, installation, testing, and integration of ALS-U systems.

Key ResponsibilitiesElectrical CAD Design
  • Create and maintain detailed electrical CAD models, schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using project-approved CAD software.
  • Develop electrical designs that translate engineering concepts and requirements into manufacturable products.
  • Utilize software such as AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, KiCad, or other LBNL-approved CAD platforms.
  • Review, update, and revise designs based on engineering feedback, design reviews, and approved engineering changes.
  • Ensure designs accurately reflect engineering requirements and integrate with associated assemblies and systems.
Manufacturing & Assembly Documentation
  • Prepare manufacturing-ready electrical documentation to support fabrication, assembly, installation, and testing.
  • Generate and maintain:
    • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
    • Wire and cable lists/schedules
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Electrical schematics
    • Panel layouts
    • Engineering drawings
    • Manufacturing and assembly documentation
  • Ensure documentation contains sufficient detail for successful manufacturing, assembly, and installation activities.
Engineering Coordination & Design Integration
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, project managers, manufacturing personnel, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings and design reviews as requested.
  • Incorporate approved engineering changes and design-review feedback into CAD models and documentation.
  • Support the integration of electrical and mechanical designs within larger product assemblies and engineered systems.
Design Standards & Document Control
  • Perform work in accordance with applicable industry standards, codes, engineering practices, and LBNL quality requirements.
  • Maintain organized CAD files, design libraries, drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Maintain revision-controlled documentation within Windchill, PLM/PDM systems, or other LBNL-designated engineering systems.
  • Ensure design documentation is accurate, traceable, and properly controlled.
Typical Deliverables

Depending on project requirements and individual work authorizations, deliverables may include:

  • Electrical CAD models
  • Electrical schematics
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Panel layouts
  • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Wire and cable schedules
  • Manufacturing and assembly documentation
  • Engineering drawing revisions
  • Revision-controlled design documentation
  • Design packages supporting fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation
  • Other electrical engineering documentation required to support ALS-U project execution
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical, KiCad, or equivalent electrical CAD/design software.
  • Demonstrated experience producing manufacturing-ready electrical documentation, including:
    • Electrical schematics
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Bills of Materials
    • Wire and cable schedules
  • Experience maintaining revision-controlled engineering documentation using PLM or PDM systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical components, schematic development, and wiring practices.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical design standards, codes, and industry practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, well-organized engineering documentation.
