This role partners with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, Maintenance & Reliability, and EHS teams to establish, interpret, and integrate equipment safety requirements into new buildings, capital projects, process changes, pilots, and equipment deployments. Beginning with initial builds and continuing through commissioning, the Safety Engineer conducts equipment build reviews and technical risk assessments. They ensure machinery, automation, and material-handling systems include appropriate engineering controls and meet safety build standards.

Does this sounds like you? If so, we want you to apply today!

What you’ll do:

  • Act as the embedded safety engineering SME for new buildings, capital equipment deployments, process changes, pilots, and equipment modifications across the Chewy Fulfillment Network, including Chewy Rx.
  • Coordinate with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, Maintenance & Reliability (M&R), Operations, and EHS teams from concept through commissioning.
  • Participate as a technical EHS partner in adapting to new procedures. Review equipment modifications, process changes, and facility alterations to identify design-related hazards.
  • Review engineering drawings, CAD files, design packages, specifications, and vendor submittals for material-handling equipment, conveyors, automation, racking, and related warehouse systems to identify hazards and recommend engineering controls.
  • Conduct safety design reviews and risk assessments for new and modified equipment using ISO 12100, ANSI B11, and hierarchy-of-controls principles. Maintain hazard logs and risk registers to track mitigation measures through implementation and closure.
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws and industry consensus standards, including OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, UL, NEC, and CE conformity requirements. Define and track equipment certification requirements in coordination with vendors and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs).
  • Establish equipment safety requirements and acceptance criteria for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT). Participate in testing to verify that safeguarding, interlocks, emergency-stop systems, access controls, and other required engineering controls are documented and function as designed before operational use.
  • Ensure equipment safety requirements are incorporated into facility layouts, construction documents, equipment specifications, commissioning plans, FAT and SAT protocols, and turnover documentation.
  • Develop, own, and maintain equipment safety policies, design standards, technical requirements, review processes, and supporting documentation for consistent application across the network. Develop technical training when necessary to support effective implementation.
  • Provide technical support for equipment safety assessments, equipment-related incident investigations, and complex issues called out by field EHS, Engineering, M&R, or Operations teams.

  • Experience participating in Management of Change (MOC) processes as a technical reviewer or SME; ability to evaluate proposed engineering and operational changes for safety impact and recommend effective mitigations
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and safety design reviews, applying the hierarchy of controls to identify and mitigate hazards at the design and engineering stage
