Job Summary

Avangrid relies on accurate, highresolution forecasting to optimize the economic and operational performance of its wind and solar generation fleet. The Senior Meteorologist & AI Forecasting Systems Lead plays a critical role in both operational forecasting and the digital transformation of Avangrid's meteorological and powerforecasting capabilities.

This position combines advanced numerical weather prediction (NWP), meteorological analysis, and renewableenergy forecasting expertise with leadership in AIenabled forecasting technologies, automated modeling workflows, and system modernization. The role supports daily forecasting operations while driving the transition from manual forecast enhancement to scalable, AIdriven forecasting frameworks.

The ideal candidate brings deep atmospheric science knowledge, strong programming and dataengineering skills, and experience integrating advanced forecasting tools into commercial and operational environments. This position also supports operational forecasting shifts as needed.

Key Responsibilities

AIEnabled Forecasting & Digital Transformation

  • Lead the transition from manual forecastenhancement processes to automated, AIenabled forecasting workflows across daily, hourly, and subhourly horizons.

  • Design and implement forecasting frameworks that leverage machinelearningaugmented NWP, ensemble modeling, and advanced postprocessing techniques.

  • Evaluate, onboard, and operationalize AIenabled forecasting vendors, tools, and technologies.

  • Develop and maintain forecastperformance metrics, validation routines, and continuousimprovement processes.

  • Ensure forecasting outputs meet the needs of trading, realtime operations, asset management, and marketcompliance functions.

Forecasting, Modeling & Meteorological Analysis

  • Serve as an NWP specialist and atmospheric data analyst, maintaining and enhancing forecasting tools, meteorological products, databases, and modeling workflows.

  • Integrate and interpret meteorological data from internal models, thirdparty forecast providers, AIenhanced systems, and public sources to produce accurate wind and solar generation forecasts.

  • Perform meteorological analysis, model evaluation, and postprocessing to improve forecast skill and operational accuracy.

  • Communicate forecasts, uncertainty, and risk clearly and within strict operational deadlines.

  • Provide forecasting and analytical support for wind and solar facility operations, maintenance planning, and construction activities.

  • Participate in rotating onsite forecasting shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Systems, Data Infrastructure & CrossFunctional Collaboration

  • Maintain and enhance the technical infrastructure supporting NWP ingestion, postprocessing, verification, and highresolution modeling.

  • Collaborate with IT, Data & Analytics, and Market Operations to define data pipelines, system requirements, and governance standards for AIenabled forecasting.

  • Support production deployment, system resilience, and operational readiness of forecasting tools, including servers, databases, dataflows, and computational clusters.

  • Ensure highquality use of meteorological, SCADA, and assetperformance data in forecasting applications.

Operational Enablement, Training & Change Management

  • Support the evolution of Trading Meteorology toward model oversight, performance monitoring, and exceptionbased human intervention.

  • Develop documentation, training materials, and operational handoffs to ensure durable adoption of new forecasting technologies.

  • Mentor and train new meteorologists in NWP systems, modeling tools, AIenhanced forecasting methodologies, and operational processes.

  • Adhere to internal controls, documentation standards, and compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related technical discipline.

  • Minimum of 3 years of operational forecasting experience, including work with meteorological computational modeling applications and numerical weather prediction.

  • Strong working knowledge of numerical weather prediction (NWP), renewable power forecasting, and forecast verification techniques.

  • Experience supporting wind and/or solar generation assets in operational or commercial contexts.

  • Proficiency in programming and dataanalysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, shell scripting, PERL, Ruby, JavaScript, PHP, Visual Basic).

  • Strong Linux proficiency, including system administration, troubleshooting, and software installation.

  • Experience with AVEVA PI, SEEQ, Tableau, and relational databases.

  • Ability to work crossfunctionally with trading, operations, vendors, and technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related technical discipline.

  • Direct experience deploying or operationalizing AI or machinelearningbased forecasting solutions.

  • Familiarity with cloudbased analytics environments, automated modeling workflows, or MLOps principles.

  • Experience supporting ISO/RTO market participation and realtime trading environments.
