How much do computational modeling jobs pay per hour?
What are some examples of computational models?
What is a Computational Modeling job?
A Computational Modeling job involves developing and using mathematical models, simulations, and algorithms to analyze complex systems across various fields, such as engineering, physics, biology, and finance. Professionals in this role apply computational techniques to study real-world phenomena, predict outcomes, and optimize processes. They often work with programming languages, statistical methods, and high-performance computing to create accurate and efficient models.
Is 3D modeling a high paying job?
Do computational biologists get paid well?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computational Modeling position, and why are they important?
To thrive in computational modeling, a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and domain-specific knowledge (such as engineering, physics, or biology) is essential, often supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Python, MATLAB, or R, as well as experience with simulation software and data analysis tools, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities enable professionals to build accurate models, collaborate successfully with interdisciplinary teams, and translate complex results into actionable insights.
What does a typical day look like for someone working in computational modeling?
A typical day for a computational modeling professional often involves developing and refining mathematical or computer-based models, running simulations, and analyzing large datasets to draw meaningful conclusions. You’ll collaborate closely with domain experts, engineers, and researchers to ensure models accurately reflect real-world processes. The role may also involve presenting findings to stakeholders, troubleshooting code or software issues, and keeping up with new modeling techniques and industry advancements. This dynamic environment requires balancing independent problem-solving with teamwork and communication.

Job description
The Noel Lab (noel-lab.org) in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota is seeking highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to join our team. Funded by the Simons Foundation), these positions offer an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of systems neuroscience and computational modeling.Â
Our lab is broadly interested in Bayesian inference, perception, multisensory integration, spatial navigation, sensorimotor loops, embodied cognition, and computational psychiatry. We work across levels of analysisfrom single neurons to human behaviorusing both rodent and human models. This position will focus primarily on rodent research, though exceptional candidates with expertise in human cognitive neuroscience are encouraged to apply.
Position Overview
Successful candidates will lead projects involving:
Large-scale neurophysiology (e.g., Neuropixels recordings) in awake, behaving rodents.
Computational modeling and advanced data analysis.
Â
At least one role will be embedded within the newly launched Simons Collaboration on Ecological Neuroscience (SCENE)a multi-species, international consortium exploring ecological behaviors across rodents, bats, non-human primates, and humans (https://www.simonsfoundation.org/2025/04/24/simons-foundation-launches-collaboration-on-ecological-neuroscience/).
Â
Collaborative Network
You will engage with a global team of scientists, including but not limited to:
Jan Zimmermann (University of Minnesota)
Mate Lengyel (Cambridge)
Daniel Wolpert (Columbia)
Cris Neill (University of Oregon)
Andreas Tolias (Stanford)
Alexander & Mackenzie Mathis (EPFL)
Constantin Rothkopf (TU Darmstadt)
Nanthia Suthana (Duke)
Â
Opportunities for travel, data sharing, and joint publications across sites will be plentiful.
Job Responsibilities
Research (95% effort)
Design and conduct innovative experiments (e.g., neurophysiology data collection)
Build and maintain behavioral and neurophysiology rigs (head-fixed and freely-moving paradigms, including video-tracking)
Rodent surgeries
Analyze data and contribute to computational models
Draft high-quality figures, manuscripts, and grant materials
Present findings at scientific meetings
Mentoring and Instruction (5% effort)
Mentor students and foster a dynamic, collaborative lab culture.
Maintain proper documentation and keep standard operating procedures up to date.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python
Hands-on experience with rodent behavior and surgeries
Expertise in large-scale neurophysiology and histology
Skilled in single-cell/population data analysis (e.g., GLMs, decoding)
Preferred Qualifications
Background in machine learning or computational modeling (Bayesian methods, neural networks, etc.)
Experience with marker-less video tracking and computer vision
Experience with CAD design and 3D printing
Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., SQL)
