Computational Modeling Intern information

What are some common challenges faced by Computational Modeling Interns during their internship?

Computational Modeling Interns often encounter challenges such as adapting to complex simulation software and learning the specific coding standards used by their team. They may also need to balance multiple projects while ensuring the accuracy and reproducibility of their models. Collaboration with researchers and engineers is frequent, so strong communication skills are important to effectively interpret data and incorporate feedback. These challenges provide valuable learning opportunities and help interns develop a strong foundation for a future career in computational modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computational Modeling Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Modeling Intern, you generally need a solid background in mathematics, physics, or engineering, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB. Familiarity with simulation software, data analysis tools, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help interns excel when interpreting results and collaborating with research teams. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently developing, testing, and refining computational models that drive innovation and research progress.

What does a Computational Modeling Intern do?

A Computational Modeling Intern assists in developing and running computer-based simulations to analyze scientific, engineering, or business problems. They work with specialized software and programming languages to build models that predict outcomes, test hypotheses, or optimize processes. Interns often collaborate with experienced researchers or engineers, interpret simulation results, and help document findings. This role provides valuable hands-on experience with computational tools and methodologies used in various industries.

What is the difference between Computational Modeling Intern vs Data Analyst Intern?

AspectComputational Modeling InternData Analyst Intern
Required CredentialsUndergraduate or graduate in STEM, programming skillsUndergraduate or graduate in related field, analytical skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, academiaBusiness, finance, tech firms, research institutions
Employer & Industry UsageResearch projects, product development, simulationsData analysis, reporting, decision support

Computational Modeling Interns focus on developing and applying computational models and simulations, often requiring programming and mathematical skills. Data Analyst Interns primarily analyze datasets to extract insights, supporting business decisions. While both roles involve data handling, the Modeling Intern emphasizes simulation and algorithm development, whereas the Data Analyst Intern concentrates on data interpretation and reporting.

Job description

Job Requisition ID #
26WD94900
About The Team:
You will work with a cross-functional team within Autodesk Research, including members of the Simulation, Optimization and Systems (SOS), Industry Futures, and Engineering organizations. Together, the team explores the future of product design for Autodesk's Design & Manufacturing customers, bridging research, advanced engineering, and real-world workflows. As a member of the team, you will have access to state-of-the-art workshops and manufacturing expertise within the Autodesk Toronto Technology Centre.
About The Role:
As an Intern at Autodesk, you will be immersed in driving and owning projects that directly impact our customers, internal teams, or core products. You'll work alongside cross functional teams and mentors within Autodesk Research, gaining hands-on experience to further drive personal growth. In this role you will investigate and prototype a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach tailored for the conceptual design of small-scale mechanical assemblies. The intern will explore integration of MBSE practices with computational geometry, AI/ML methods, and CAD/CAM workflows to improve early design fidelity.
Responsibilities:
  • Having a dedicated mentor who will help you navigate through Autodesk from Day 1 - all while showing you what it means to be an Autodesker!
  • Managing your project end-to-end, including research, project planning, implementation, and demonstration
  • Partnering with various cross-functional teams to solve critical problems across the Autodesk organization
  • Combine your knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering and state-of-the-art AI tools to create proof-of-concept prototypes and demonstrations
  • Managing incomplete, ambiguous, or evolving requirements during early concept development
  • Adapt MBSE processes traditionally used for large-scale systems to smaller assemblies while maintaining design fidelity
  • Integration of your output into broader team initiatives
  • Acting as an MBSE reference for the team and providing guidance with respect to the products being studied
  • Document research findings, prototypes, and lessons learned for future reference

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree program in Systems Engineering or Model Based Systems Engineering (Must be currently enrolled in a full-time, degree seeking program)
  • Proven track record with managing projects and challenges
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including assembly design and kinematic analysis
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with software development for prototyping
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts and experience using AI tools for software development or prototyping
  • Experience with CAD/CAM and reverse engineering
  • Understanding of product design, manufacturing processes, and design-for-assembly principles
  • Systems Engineering & MBSE
  • Familiarity with SysML
  • Understanding of quantitative trade-off methods (Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Pareto analysis)
  • Experience using Modelica, MATLAB, or similar tools for systems analysis
  • Practical experience applying model-based systems engineering principles to product design

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience from internships, extracurriculars, or other side projects
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Passion for Autodesk and/or desire to learn more about the domain
  • Doctoral degree program in Systems Engineering or Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Experience operating advanced manufacturing equipment (i.e. CNC mill, 3D-scanner, CMM, 3d printers)
  • Experience designing assemblies and product development processes
  • Well versed in implementing MBSE frameworks and system architectures
