What is a computational geometry job?

A Computational Geometry job involves designing, analyzing, and implementing algorithms to solve geometric problems. These roles are common in fields like computer graphics, robotics, geographic information systems (GIS), and computer-aided design (CAD). Professionals in this field work with spatial data structures, optimization methods, and geometric modeling techniques to improve efficiency and accuracy in applications. Strong skills in algorithms, mathematics, and programming (often in C++, Python, or specialized libraries) are essential.

What types of projects do computational geometry professionals typically work on?

Computational Geometry professionals often work on projects involving the development and optimization of algorithms for spatial data processing, 3D modeling, collision detection, mesh generation, and pathfinding. These projects can support a wide range of industries, including computer-aided design (CAD), robotics, computer graphics, and geographic information systems (GIS). Team members may collaborate closely with software engineers, data scientists, and hardware designers to integrate geometric algorithms into larger systems. The work environment is typically collaborative, innovative, and detail-oriented, offering opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge technologies and industry advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the computational geometry position, and why are they important?

To excel in Computational Geometry roles, a strong background in mathematics, algorithms, and computer science, often supported by an advanced degree, is essential. Proficiency in programming languages like C++, Python, or Java, as well as experience with computational geometry libraries and tools, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and collaboration skills enable professionals to effectively tackle complex geometrical challenges with teams. These competencies are critical for developing efficient algorithms and innovative solutions in fields such as computer graphics, robotics, CAD, and geographic information systems.

Job description

Our Mapping team is responsible for building the algorithms and tools necessary to keep Zoox vehicles well calibrated, always aware of their location in the world, and aware of their environment. Without precise calibration, localization, and mapping, our vehicles would be at a disadvantage in perceiving and reasoning about the surrounding world, and this is therefore foundational to enabling results from many other teams across Zoox. This work is critical to scaling autonomous driving safely and reliably. We are looking for engineers who are ambitious and excited about helping Zoox achieve its goals of delivering autonomous mobility.

The Road Network Interface team owns road network data definition and data products for all consumers, including developer workflows, in-cluster training jobs, and on-vehicle real-time access. We are seeking a Software Engineer to develop the geometry algorithms behind these data products and the interfaces consumers use to access them - including network topology, road network data format, and validation.

In this role, you will...
  • Develop and maintain the geometry algorithms that power our map data interfaces.

  • Implement and maintain key parts of our mapping data format, validation frameworks, post-processing pipelines, and interfaces consumed by downstream customers.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Zoox to ship features and grow the APIs that downstream consumers depend on.

  • Create design documentation, test plans, and other supporting artifacts for the work you ship.

  • Contribute to all phases of the software development cycle, including prototyping, requirements capture, design, implementation, and validation.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or higher in Computer Science or related field

  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience

  • Proficiency in C++

  • Strong code-quality fundamentals - correctness, testability, modularity

  • Strong mathematical skills, particularly in computational geometry

  • Experience working with large data sets

Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience working with geographic data, spatial acceleration structures, or surface meshes

  • Familiarity with road network topology

  • Knowledge of statistics and metric design

  • Experience with software profiling or performance tuning

Base Salary Range

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.

Zoox also offers a comprehensive package of benefits, including paid time off (e.g. sick leave, vacation, bereavement), unpaid time off, Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, Amazon RSUs, health insurance, long-term care insurance, long-term and short-term disability insurance, and life insurance.
