Computational Engineering Internship information

What is a computational engineering internship?

A Computational Engineering Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates, where they apply their knowledge of computer science, mathematics, and engineering to solve real-world problems using computational methods. Interns typically work on projects involving simulation, modeling, data analysis, or software development in engineering fields. This role provides hands-on experience with industry tools and technologies, and helps interns develop practical skills in areas such as programming, numerical analysis, and algorithm design. Interns may also collaborate with experienced engineers and researchers, contributing to ongoing projects and gaining valuable insights into engineering workflows.

What types of projects does a computational engineering intern typically work on, and how do these projects contribute to their professional development?

Computational Engineering Interns often work on projects involving simulation, modeling, data analysis, or algorithm development to solve real engineering problems. These assignments may include optimizing engineering processes, validating simulation results, or supporting the development of new computational tools. Interns usually collaborate closely with experienced engineers, gaining exposure to industry software and best practices. This hands-on experience not only develops their technical abilities but also helps them build teamwork and communication skills essential for advancing in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Engineering Intern, you need a solid background in mathematics, programming (such as Python, MATLAB, or C++), and engineering principles, typically gained through relevant coursework or a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, numerical analysis tools, and version control systems like Git is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and contribute to complex engineering projects. These competencies are crucial for efficiently supporting engineering teams and delivering accurate computational analyses in a fast-paced environment.

What is the difference between Computational Engineering Internship vs Mechanical Engineering Internship?

AspectComputational Engineering InternshipMechanical Engineering Internship
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in computational, software, or engineering disciplinesTypically pursuing or holding a degree in mechanical engineering or related fields
Work EnvironmentFocus on software development, simulations, and modeling in labs or office settingsHands-on hardware, design, and testing in labs, manufacturing, or field environments
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, automotive, energy, and tech sectors for simulation and analysisCommon in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and product design industries

Computational Engineering Internships focus on software, modeling, and simulation tasks, often in tech-driven industries, while Mechanical Engineering Internships involve physical design, testing, and hardware work. Both roles require engineering backgrounds but differ in daily tasks and work environments.

Job description

Overview

VTG is seeking a high-potential, early-career Associate Software Engineer to support the continued development of the Supply Chain Illumination and Program Risk (SCIPR) application. SCIPR is a mission-critical, government-owned application delivering supply chain risk visibility and decision support across multiple government entities. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, full-stack development, and mission analytics, with direct impact on national security and industrial base resilience. This position is located in Orlando, FL (preferred), and or DC Metro Area (considered).

You will operate in an agile product environment, contributing to a modern web-based platform that integrates diverse data sources, applies risk scoring across DoD taxonomies, and delivers actionable insights to senior defense stakeholders.

What will you do?
  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack features for the SCIPR web application

  • Build and enhance front-end components using React to deliver intuitive, data-rich user experiences

  • Develop backend services and APIs using Python

  • Integrate structured and unstructured data sources to support supply chain risk analytics

  • Collaborate within an Agile/Scrum team using Jira for backlog management and sprint execution

  • Maintain code quality, version control, and CI/CD pipelines using GitLab

  • Support data modeling and visualization efforts aligned to DoD risk taxonomies

  • Participate in requirements refinement, sprint planning, and technical design discussions

  • Contribute to documentation required for Risk Management Framework (RMF) alignment and auditability

Do you have what it takes?

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field

  • 1-5 years of relevant experience (internships, academic projects, or early professional experience may be considered)

  • Proficiency in Python for backend development

  • Experience building front-end applications using React (or similar modern JS frameworks)

  • Familiarity with Git-based version control (GitLab preferred)

  • Exposure to Agile development practices and tools such as Jira

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or DoD platforms such as DENIX/COSMOS equivalents)

  • Exposure to data analytics, data pipelines, or visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js)

  • Basic competency in Bash scripting and Linux environments, including command-line operations and file system navigation

  • Familiarity with web application deployment using Docker and Docker Compose, or equivalent containerization tools

  • Understanding of efficient design principles in web applications, including lazy loading, optimized rendering and asset management

  • Solid understanding of time complexity and computational efficiency, especially when handling large datasets or data pipelines.

  • Understanding of supply chain, logistics, or risk modeling concepts

  • Experience working in or supporting DoD or federal programs

  • Familiarity with security practices aligned to RMF or National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) frameworks

What Sets This Role Apart

  • Mission Impact: Directly supports DoD supply chain resilience and readiness

  • Growth Opportunity: High visibility with senior stakeholders; strong upward mobility into senior engineering, product, or analytics roles

  • Modern Tech Stack: Work with contemporary tools across full-stack development, data integration, and analytics

  • Agile Environment: True product-oriented development with influence over backlog prioritization and feature delivery

  • Strategic Exposure: Opportunity to contribute to a flagship capability aligned with national-level supply chain initiatives

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are a technically grounded, intellectually curious developer who wants to apply your skills to meaningful problems. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, eager to learn, and motivated by building solutions that drive real-world outcomes, not just writing code

VTG’s estimated starting pay range is $85,000-$115,000 which is a general guideline for the geographic location. When extending an offer, VTG also considers work experience, education, skill level, market considerations and may possibly include contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
