Job description

Who We Are:

SHOTOVER Systems is headquartered in beautiful Boulder, CO, and designs and builds high-end gyro-stabilized airborne camera systems and augmented reality software used by airborne law enforcement agencies, firefighters, military, utilities, television stations, and cinematographers around the world. With additional locations in New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland, and the UK, we offer a seamless end-to-end solution of software and hardware solutions while delivering an unprecedented level of control, versatility, and ease-of-use in a compact package backed by world-class service and support.

Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our growing team in Hamilton, Ontario, where we prototype and develop camera systems for our gimbals. As a key member of our local design team, you will collaborate with the gimbal team in Queenstown, New Zealand, and the mission computer and augmented reality team in Boulder, Colorado, to develop systems that meet the rigorous demands of our current and future customers.

This role offers dynamic technical challenges. You will drive the complete development lifecycle for mechanical and electro-optical camera subsystems, managing the entire process from initial concept, analysis, and hands-on prototyping through to assembly, manufacturing, verification, troubleshooting, and meticulous documentation.

SHOTOVER combines the agility of a focused team with global recognition. We operate in an environment where individual contribution is paramount and supervision is minimal. We are looking for a self-directed professional who combines technical expertise with a results-driven mindset. If you are an engineer who thrives on taking initiative and solving complex problems with a positive attitude, you will fit right in.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze electro-optical and mechatronic systems tailored for airborne environments.
  • Engineer robust products using SolidWorks, applying advanced analysis techniques to create precise engineering drawings.
  • Champion design reviews to ensure project milestones are met and custom parts are released for manufacture on schedule.
  • Construct and validate engineering prototypes to verify design intent and optimize for assembly and testing.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including part and assembly drawings, assembly procedures, and technical packages for design reviews.
  • Provide technical expertise in supplier selection and support to ensure component manufacturability and quality.
  • Ensure on-time delivery and maintain high quality standards for all designs and analyses.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable knowledge of precision mechanics and opto-mechanical design principles.
  • Advanced skills in mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and product data management (PDM) tools.
  • Ability to conduct sound structural and thermal analysis (Finite Element Analysis & Computational Fluid Dynamics).
  • Deep understanding of electro-mechanical precision drive design principles.
  • Ability to interpret complex schematic diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and methods.
  • A self-starting, hands-on approach to engineering challenges.
  • Capable of thinking outside the box to investigate root causes while maintaining an uncompromising standard for detail.
  • Self-awareness and application of critical self-reflection to strengthen collaboration and team success.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering (advanced degree is an asset), or a Technical College Diploma combined with exceptional relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the following:
    • Advanced CAD design, FEA, CFD, and GD&T.
    • Hands-on experience designing, building, and testing electro-mechanical systems.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of opto-mechanical systems.
  • Collaborative Ownership: Thrives in a tight-knit, collaborative environment, prioritizing open communication and proactively taking ownership of project outcomes.
  • Familiarity with aerospace design and testing standards is a bonus.

SHOTOVER performs background checks prior to employment as all applicants must be eligible for registration with the Controlled Goods Program and be able to maintain a positive security assessment.

Benefits: Generous PTO, supplemental insurance
