How much do computational cognitive science jobs pay per year?
What is a computational cognitive science?
A Computational Cognitive Science job involves using computational models, artificial intelligence, and data analysis to study human cognition, including learning, reasoning, perception, and decision-making. Professionals in this field work at the intersection of cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and computer science to develop simulations and algorithms that mimic human thought processes. They may apply their expertise in academia, tech companies, healthcare, or AI research, contributing to advancements in human-computer interaction, machine learning, and cognitive system design.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in computational cognitive science?
To thrive in Computational Cognitive Science, a strong background in cognitive psychology, computer science, and mathematics—often supported by a relevant advanced degree—is essential. Experience with data analysis software (such as Python, R, or MATLAB), machine learning libraries, and experimental design tools is typically expected. Critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this field. These abilities enable professionals to design robust experiments, analyze complex data, and translate insights into impactful research or product developments.
What are the most common challenges faced by professionals in computational cognitive science?
One of the main challenges in Computational Cognitive Science is integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, and computer science to build and validate complex models of human cognition. Professionals often have to balance rigorous experimental design with advanced computational techniques, all while staying current with rapidly evolving technologies and research findings. Collaboration with diverse teams—including software engineers, data scientists, and behavioral researchers—is common and may require adjusting communication styles to bridge knowledge gaps. Successfully navigating these challenges can make a significant impact in both academic and industry settings, leading to advancements in artificial intelligence, user experience design, and human-computer interaction.

Job description
The Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in generative AI and cognitive science at the rank of assistant professor, without tenure, or associate professor, with tenure. The past few years have witnessed the emergence of powerful AI systems that can use language, reason, and act in increasingly human-like ways. From these developments, a new subfield of cognitive science is emerging, one that compares information processing across biological and artificial minds, and uses insights from the study of natural minds to develop new computational capacities in artificial minds.
Qualifications
We seek a scholar who will lead Michigan into this next era of research on cognition. This is an academic year appointment with an expected start on August 25, 2027. This position is part of a cluster of four new AI-related positions in the Departments of Psychology, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychiatry, with all four faculty expected to affiliate with the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science. New faculty hired will be expected to establish an independent research program and will be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship.
Application Instructions
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. Applicants will submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, statement of current and future research plans, sample papers, teaching evaluations or other evidence of teaching excellence, and contact information for three letters of reference. To apply, submit materials by September 21, 2026 at the following site: https://apply.interfolio.com/188199. For inquiries about this position, please contact the search committee chair, Rick Lewis, rickl@umich.edu.
Employment will require a successful criminal background check and may require an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct. Candidates may be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as an authorization to release information form, and must meet all degree requirements prior to the start date of the position. The University of Michigan is supportive of the needs of dual career couples and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
