Computational Chemical Engineering Intern information

What does a computational chemical engineering intern do?

A Computational Chemical Engineering Intern uses computer-based models, simulations, and data analysis to solve problems in chemical engineering. Their tasks may include developing or running simulations of chemical processes, analyzing large datasets, and helping to optimize production systems. They often work with software tools such as MATLAB, Aspen Plus, or Python, and collaborate with engineers and researchers to improve process efficiency and safety. This internship provides hands-on experience in applying computational methods to real-world chemical engineering challenges.

What types of projects do computational chemical engineering interns typically work on during their internship?

Computational Chemical Engineering Interns often contribute to projects involving process simulation, molecular modeling, or data analysis using specialized software. They may work on optimizing chemical processes, designing experiments virtually, or analyzing large datasets to improve efficiency. Interns frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including process engineers, chemists, and data scientists, to solve real-world engineering problems. These experiences help interns develop technical skills and gain insight into how computational methods are applied in the chemical engineering industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational chemical engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Chemical Engineering Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in chemical engineering principles, thermodynamics, and process modeling, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, MATLAB, or COMSOL Multiphysics, and basic programming skills in Python or MATLAB are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help interns interpret data and work collaboratively on research teams. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to complex engineering projects and adapt to the dynamic technical challenges in the field.

What is the difference between Computational Chemical Engineering Intern vs Chemical Engineering Intern?

AspectComputational Chemical Engineering InternChemical Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of chemical engineering or related program; familiarity with programming and simulation toolsEnrolled in or recent graduate of chemical engineering program; basic engineering coursework
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office and computer-based work, focusing on simulations and modelingLaboratory, plant visits, and hands-on process work
Industry UsageUsed in companies emphasizing process simulation, modeling, and computational analysisCommon across manufacturing, energy, and chemical plants for process development

The Computational Chemical Engineering Intern role focuses on simulation, modeling, and computational analysis, often requiring programming skills. In contrast, the Chemical Engineering Intern typically involves more hands-on process work and laboratory tasks. Both roles are valuable in chemical industry internships but differ mainly in work environment and skill emphasis.

Job description

About Mariana Minerals
Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company on a mission to supply the critical minerals powering modern energy, AI, and defense technologies. We're reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
The Role
We are hiring a Chemical Engineering Intern to work on real, high-impact problems within the Operations team. You will contribute directly to commissioning a first-of-a-kind copper scrap recycling plant, working closely with engineers and domain experts.
This role is designed to provide hands-on experience building and shipping solutions, not just supporting tasks.
What You'll Do
  • Assist in commissioning pilot equipment
  • Operate pilot plant to perform various process tests and performance evaluations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members including engineers and operators
  • Present outcomes and learnings at the end of the internship
Desired Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy
  • Strong fundamentals in fundamental knowledge, data recording, organization and analysis, and equipment operation/maintenance
  • Hands-on experience with processing equipment
  • Ability to break down problems and execute independently
  • Clear communication and willingness to learn
  • Willingness to work both day & night shifts with operators and engineers
Our culture is built on three principles:
Extreme Ownership - We take full responsibility for outcomes, relentlessly driving toward solutions.
Engineer Out Requirements, then Automate - We simplify, optimize, and then automate for scale.
Share Your Legos - We collaborate openly, share knowledge, and empower each other to build bigger, better solutions.
Join us as we build the future of responsible mineral sourcing and supply.
