Job description

Position Summary

The Field Service Technician (FST) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas compression equipment within an assigned territory. This role supports USA Compression's field operations by ensuring equipment uptime, performing preventive and corrective maintenance, and providing highquality service to internal and external customers. The FST works independently in remote field environments and plays a critical role in maintaining operational continuity for midstream partners. USA Compression employees are proudly responsible for maintaining a safe and professional work environment and positive workplace aligned with our Pillars culture.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on natural gas compression equipment, including engines, compressors, coolers, and associated components.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues to minimize downtime.

  • Conduct engine overhauls, compressor rebuilds, and component replacements as needed.

  • Complete startups, shutdowns, and commissioning activities safely and efficiently.

Operational Support

  • Monitor equipment performance and operating conditions; identify and escalate abnormal trends.

  • Works overtime and is available for on-call rotations. Overtime and on-call requirements include work after regular work hours, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with USA Compression standards, OEM specifications, and regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for submitting accurate maintenance reports, expense reports, timesheets and other necessary paperwork daily.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and environmental guidelines.

  • Participate in safety meetings, audits, and required training.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, including service reports, work orders, and parts usage.

Customer & Team Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary field contact for customers, providing professional communication and timely updates.

  • Coordinate with operations, logistics, and engineering teams to support equipment needs.

  • Maintain company tools, vehicles, and equipment in clean, safe working condition.

Qualifications

Required

  • Solid professional communication/interface skills with customer field personnel, onsite vendors, and other employees. This role is often the USAC position with the most customer interaction. Excellent customer service and positive communication skills are critical to the success in the FST role.

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Mechanical aptitude with experience in engines, rotating equipment, or heavy machinery.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to work independently in outdoor, remote, and sometimes harsh environments.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Must provide own small hand tools.

Preferred

  • Prefer at least 2 years of experience in gas compression with preference to CAT, Ariel and/or Cummins certifications and experience. Depending on the equipment assigned, this role may maintain large or small horsepower units, gas lift or traditional compression units along with other related equipment associated with our business.

  • Technical certification or vocational training in diesel, natural gas engines, or industrial maintenance.

  • Experience in midstream oil & gas field operations.

Work Environment

  • This position is 100% on-site and field-based; no remote or hybrid work is available.

  • Regular travel within assigned territory; occasional overnight travel may be required.

  • Exposure to outdoor weather, rotating equipment, and industrial environments.

  • Some exposure to high noise levels in excess of 85dBA that require ear protection, as well as exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and materials.
