The Opportunity

Our Compression / BOP Team is evolving to meet the needs of our growing business and we are seeking a Compression Engineer. This position will provide support to compression facilities in the region that utilize a variety of compression equipment including reciprocating units and turbine/centrifugal compressor units. The position will also support balance of plant (BOP) equipment within the facility including air systems, piping and valves, tanks and other systems required for reliable operation of the facility. The successful candidate must have in-depth knowledge of a variety of industrial equipment used in gas compression systems. This position will be responsible for the support of all mechanical equipment at the assigned compressor stations.

This position is eligible for our domestic relocation program. The successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Bonduel, WI., Duluth, MN., or Tinley Park, IL. Maintenance Office.

What you'll do

  • Provide support to Operations on day-to-day issues at assigned compressor stations

  • Conduct root cause analysis investigations

  • Provide sound engineering to determine cost-effective solutions to urgent problems such as compressor startup problems, compressor shutdowns/faults, coolant or oil contamination, capacity deficiencies; gas conditioning - drip gas, water, dirt ingestion; station piping problems (support, vibration, excessive pressure drop, etc.), auxiliary system malfunctions (including ESD)

  • Identify, scope, estimate and engineer 'break fix' projects to repair failed systems, machines and/or components

  • Identify, scope, estimate and engineer capital and maintenance projects to provide long term solutions for facility defects and systemic issues

  • Provide diagnosis, support repairs, and perform root cause analysis for significant failures and abnormal operation events

  • Provide operational and maintenance recommendations based on: oil and coolant analysis, performance and vibration test results, enterprise analytics notifications (remote condition monitoring system), and borescope inspections

  • Verify adequate capacity of pressure limiting and overpressure protection devices

  • Provide code interpretation services or coordinate third party reviews for issues and installations regarding compressor stations

  • Assist with PHMSA audit preparation and response

  • Provide support for facility audits to ensure compliance with company standards, policies and procedures, and governmental and industry codes

  • Engineering design standard development

  • Operations supplement development

  • Provide expert witness testimony in various forums regarding compressor operation and engineering issues

  • Provide facility expertise throughout the project scoping and design process including participation at 30%, 60% and 90% design reviews

  • Technical support for project team during facility construction and commissioning activities

  • Approve pipeline test data reports

  • Determine spare parts requirements

  • Perform gas loss calculations

  • Develop project specific blow down and purge plans

  • Provide subject specific on-the-job training

  • Provide compressor related information/data to a wide variety of stakeholders

  • Provide mentoring for the field teams in accordance with the established procedures of the technician qualification and operator qualification (OQ) programs

  • Be actively involved with the process safety, practice of engineering, management of change, and root cause analysis programs. Help to develop a strong company safety culture by encouraging involvement and leading by example

  • Other tasks as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 6+ years industry experience with natural gas compression facilities or similar equipment

  • Previously demonstrated dedication to safety

  • Ability and initiative to work independently, display creativity, and exercise sound judgement

  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills and proven ability to manage projects within scope and budget

  • Effective analytical skills

  • Skills to effectively operate in a team-oriented environment with a willingness to support team objectives

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Work closely with field teams, management, third party resources, and coordinate work with other appropriate technical resources

  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization

  • Ability to handle rapidly shifting priorities and multiple projects concurrently, requiring resolution of complex problems in stressful situations

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of reciprocating and turbine drive compressor units and ancillary equipment

  • Comprehensive understanding of DOT 192 and 193

  • Comprehensive understanding of ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.8, and API codes/standards

  • Professional Engineering License or the willingness to pursue license

This position requires candidates to

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing

  • Be subject to hazardous conditions including escaping gas, adverse weather, heights, lifting, and cramped conditions

  • Be available for overtime, extended work hours, and call-outs as needed

  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home
