Position Summary

Accessorial Manager is responsible for overseeing the management, analysis, validation, and optimization of accessorial charges associated with transportation and logistics services. This role ensures accurate billing, cost control, carrier compliance, and revenue recovery while partnering with internal departments and external carriers to improve operational efficiency and financial performance.


Key Responsibilities


Accessorial Management

  • Manage all transportation-related accessorial charges, including detention, layover, driver assist, lumper fees, stop-offs, re-delivery fees, fuel surcharges, and other supplemental transportation costs.
  • Review, validate, and approve accessorial invoices and billing requests.
  • Ensure accessorial charges comply with customer contracts, carrier agreements, and company policies.
  • Resolve discrepancies and disputes related to accessorial charges.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Monitor accessorial spend and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain reporting dashboards to track trends, KPIs, and financial performance.
  • Conduct root-cause analyses for recurring accessorial expenses.
  • Provide recommendations to leadership on cost-containment initiatives.

Carrier & Customer Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for accessorial-related issues with carriers and customers.
  • Negotiate and audit accessorial charges to ensure accuracy and fairness.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with transportation providers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support contract negotiations by providing historical accessorial data and insights.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve operational processes that drive accessorial costs.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for managing and approving accessorial charges.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Finance, Customer Service, and Transportation teams to improve efficiencies.
  • Implement process improvements and technology solutions to automate workflows and reporting.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of all approved accessorial charges and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, transportation regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits related to transportation and billing activities.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 37 years of experience in transportation, logistics, freight operations, carrier management, or accessorial billing.
  • Strong understanding of transportation and logistics operations.
  • Experience managing carrier relationships and cost-control initiatives.
  • Proficiency with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in freight brokerage, third-party logistics (3PL), or carrier operations.
  • Knowledge of freight auditing and payment systems.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
  • Advanced Excel, Power BI, Tableau, or data analytics experience.
