Compounding Pharmacist information

What is a compounding pharmacist?

A Compounding Pharmacist specializes in creating customized medications tailored to a patient's specific needs. They mix raw ingredients to prepare prescriptions that may not be commercially available, such as allergen-free formulations, liquid alternatives to pills, or unique dosages. This role requires extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and regulations to ensure patient safety and compliance with legal standards. Compounding Pharmacists work in specialized pharmacies, often collaborating with healthcare providers to develop personalized treatments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a compounding pharmacist?

To thrive as a Compounding Pharmacist, you need a strong understanding of pharmaceutical calculations, drug compatibility, and quality assurance, typically requiring a PharmD degree and state pharmacy licensure. Proficiency with compounding equipment, pharmacy information systems, and compliance with USP <795>, <797>, and <800> guidelines is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication with both healthcare professionals and patients are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, accurate medication preparation and effective collaboration to meet individualized patient needs.

What are some typical challenges faced by compounding pharmacists, and how can they be addressed in the workplace?

Compounding Pharmacists often face challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to compounding regulations, ensuring the sterility and accuracy of formulations, and managing customized medication requests for diverse patient populations. Staying up-to-date with changing guidelines and proper documentation is crucial, and many pharmacists collaborate closely with pharmacy technicians and prescribers to address complex or unusual cases. Regular training, quality assurance checks, and open communication within the team help mitigate potential errors and maintain high standards. If you enjoy problem-solving in a hands-on environment and value meticulous attention to detail, this role can be both rewarding and impactful.

Are compounding pharmacists in demand?

Compounding pharmacists are in steady demand due to the need for customized medications, especially in specialized healthcare settings. Their skills in preparing personalized formulations and knowledge of sterile and non-sterile compounding make them valuable in pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics, with employment opportunities expected to grow alongside the healthcare industry.

How do you become a compounding pharmacist?

To become a compounding pharmacist, one must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited pharmacy school, complete a pharmacy license exam, and gain experience in compounding techniques. Additional certification in sterile and non-sterile compounding can enhance skills and job prospects.

Job description

Are you looking for a retail opportunity where you’ll be more than just a nametag to customers? A place where you’ll get the chance to know, help, and catch up with familiar faces every day? If so, we are the place for you. Our store has enjoyed a long history in our community.  Originally founded in the 1950’s, and purchased by the current owner in 2011, H. Clark Pharmasave (https://pharmasave.com/store/pharmasave-clarks-2/) has been providing prescriptions, pharmacy services, diabetes management, general health and wellness, medication management, injection/travel health, advice, and retail services to generations of customers. Now we’re looking to add a new member to our team and continue the tradition of exceptional, personal service that we’re known for. That’s where you come in As our new Pharmacy Compounding Technician, you’ll work with a pharmacist to compound prescriptions to meet the patient’s special needs. You’ll do so by combining or processing various ingredients to arrive at a formulation that best serves the needs of the patient, which they couldn’t necessarily get from the available drugs in the market, or when a patient is found to be allergic to certain compounds of the drug that they need. You’ll have strong skills and experience to ensure that quality assurance standards are maintained in product preparation and compounding procedures, as well as in packaging and labeling of products. Responsibilities: * Compounding in non-sterile & sterile labs * Aseptic Technique  * Processing prescriptions on Kroll * Weighing out powders on Balances * Compounding different dosage form with a variety of methods * Proper documentation of compounding activities * Cleaning pharmacy and labs as per procedures * Unpacking and receiving orders * Counting prescriptions precisely * Labeling medications  * Inventory Management * Basic Calculations  You’ll be great at this role if you’ve got the following qualities in spades:  * Independence – you know what needs to be done and don’t need (or want!) someone always looking over your shoulder.    * Ability to Problem Solve – you can perform basic math, you are creative, able to adapt and adjust a plan on the fly.   * Dependability – you can be counted on to make the right decision whether you have time to weigh the options or not.   * Organized – you use your time and energy effectively and efficiently to hit deadlines.   * Detail Oriented – you ensure you have a complete understanding of the task you’re working on and always double check your work. Working with Us This is a part-time position with the possibility of expanding to full-time hours when the business grows. Your days off will vary from week to week. This store is just one of many retail and service branches in the Clark family of businesses, which means that you will have plenty of opportunity to move and grow as you succeed in this position.  Between our appreciative, multi-generational client base, and the great group of staff we’ve collected over the years, this is a fun and friendly place to work.  Qualifications * Effective oral and verbal communication, with co-staff, pharmacists, and the public * Strong knowledge of product preparation, compounding, packaging and labeling as well as quality assurance standards * Flexibility and ability to multitask in fast paced environment Assets * Previous Compounding background and experience * Knowledge of Pharmaclik and Kroll for prescription processing * Knowledge of non-sterile & sterile compounding and pharmaceutical calculations * Knowledge of Horizontal Flow Hoods & Biosafety Cabinets * Strong ability to perform optimally in a team setting * Ability to excel performing multiple tasks at the same time without making errors How to Apply Our online application will give you the option to apply to this role as a complete person – not just a resume. The application will assess your qualifications, personality traits and workplace preferences, and should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. After submitting, you'll receive an email inviting you to log in and view your assessment results. We value diversity and inclusion and encourage all qualified people to apply. If we can make this easier through accommodation in the recruitment process, please contact us with the “Help” button in the application. We will review applications as they are received, with priority given to those who have completed the assessment, and look forward to hearing from you.
