Pharmacist I - RWJBarnabas Health
At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacist I plays a critical role in patient care, home infusion therapy, and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they ensure that medications are compounded and provided in a safe, accurate, and rational manner according to legal, USP, and professional standards. They are responsible for reviewing prescriptions, preparing specialized sterile formulations, consulting with healthcare providers, supervising staff, and providing high-quality pharmaceutical care.
A typical day for a Pharmacist I may include:
  • Manages compounding workflow by ensuring accurate data entry, proper documentation, error-free prescription verification, and complete compliance with workflow protocols.
  • Prepares and verifies sterile formulations, including Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and IV mixtures, according to patient-specific orders, USP <797> standards, and strict pharmacy procedures.
  • Operates automated compounding devices (such as the Baxter EM2400), monitors production, and effectively troubleshoots or resolves compounding issues.
  • Maintains strict safety standards by adhering to all hazardous and non-hazardous Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises pharmacy technicians directly, checking their compounding sheets, delivery tickets, and final pick-and-pack tasks for total accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinates patient care seamlessly by collaborating professionally with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, other hospital departments, and referral sources.
  • Ensures operational efficiency by managing scheduled deliveries at least one day ahead and maintaining a clean, orderly medication and supply area.
  • Secures facility assets by ensuring all pharmacy areas are locked, inventory integrity is maintained, and strict security controls are followed at the end of each day.
  • Promotes continuous quality improvement by reporting any unusual occurrences, variances, or adverse events in a timely, detailed manner to enhance future safety processes.
  • Supports team flexibility by stepping in to help co-workers when appropriate and maintaining a willingness to adapt to alternating work schedules on short notice.

  • Licensure Required: Active unrestricted New Jersey Pharmacy License upon date of hire.
  • Additional Licensure Preferred: Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification (BCSCP).
  • Experience Required: A minimum of one year's pharmacy experience is recommended.
  • Experience Preferred: Home Infusion experience.
