The Compounding Chemist will be responsible for assisting in the development of formulas for the Company’s brands and private label products that meet the dynamic needs of our consumers. Reporting directly to the R&D Chemist, this role actively participates in the research and development of new products, optimization of existing products, and providing subject matter expertise to our production and quality departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• New Product Development: Work alongside the R&D Chemist to develop and produce new products for both our core internal brands and our growing suite of private label partners. As our capabilities expand, new materials and techniques mean that no two development projects are the same.
• Existing Product Optimization: Utilize your chemistry knowledge and leverage our research capabilities to make impactful improvements to existing products. Design experiments to optimize costs, increase performance, or add exciting new functionality to our existing product lines.
• Production & Quality Support: Play a vital role in scaling up processes from the laboratory bench to the production line. Provide subject matter expertise to troubleshoot production issues. Assist in Quality CAPAs and customer complaint investigations by collecting and interpreting analytical and trending data streams.
• Testing & Analysis: Perform both analytical and wet chemical analysis to characterize products, including stability testing, pH, rheology, distillation, extraction, chemical resistance, solids content, and more.
• Material Sourcing: Evaluate new raw materials and ingredients by comparing potential materials with existing specifications. Coordinate with Supply Chain to obtain raw material samples and prepare lab-scale finished products to directly compare existing and new ingredients.
• Documentation & Specifications: Create, review, and revise product specification sheets and Quality Assurance testing protocols for approved formulas. Ensure all development work is recorded in controlled and company-issued lab notebooks. Technical writing of laboratory SOPs, forms, and other documents as needed.
• Testing Support: Prepare, send, and track samples for external analytical testing & customer evaluation. Fulfill Production and Quality requests for benchtop samples.
• Other Duties: As a key player in the Research & Development department, the Compounding Chemist will be a trusted source of chemical and scientific knowledge. From identifying spilled chemicals, to answering customer questions, to advising on equipment and facility cleaning methods, the Compounding Chemist may be asked to leverage that trusted knowledge and must always be willing to share it.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related life science.
• Experience: 2+ years of hands-on experience with product formulation and/or wet chemistry in an R&D, Production, or Quality laboratory. Experience with personal care products or cosmetics is a plus!
• Compliance: Experience with or knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in food, pharma, or cosmetics is preferred.
