What is composite manufacturing?

A Composite Manufacturing job involves fabricating and assembling materials made from two or more combined substances, such as carbon fiber, fiberglass, or Kevlar, to create strong, lightweight components. Workers in this field use specialized tools and techniques like molding, curing, and lay-up processes to produce parts for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and marine. Responsibilities may include reading blueprints, operating machinery, and ensuring quality control. These roles require attention to detail, mechanical skills, and knowledge of composite materials and fabrication methods.

What skills and qualifications are needed for composite manufacturing?

To excel in Composite Manufacturing, you need a solid understanding of materials science, hands-on fabrication skills, and familiarity with manufacturing processes such as molding, laminating, and curing composites. Experience with tools like autoclaves, CNC machines, and knowledge of quality control systems or certifications like AS9100 is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills in this setting. These capabilities ensure the production of high-quality composite parts, adherence to safety and regulatory standards, and efficient collaboration within manufacturing teams.

What are the typical work environments and team structures for composite manufacturing?

Composite manufacturing roles are usually based in factory or workshop environments where safety procedures and quality standards are strictly followed. Teams often consist of technicians, engineers, and quality inspectors who collaborate closely to meet production targets and troubleshoot issues. The work may involve both individual tasks, such as prepping and assembling materials, and collaborative efforts like team inspections or process improvements. Employees often rotate between stations or specialties, gaining a well-rounded experience and opportunities for career advancement into supervisory or engineering positions. Adaptability and strong communication are valued, as priorities and team assignments can shift based on production schedules.

How much do composite manufacturing technicians make in the US?

Composite manufacturing technicians in the US typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Skilled technicians with proficiency in composite layup, curing processes, and quality control may earn higher wages and additional benefits.
