Job description

About Tergar International:

Tergar International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to transforming hearts and minds by making the ancient wisdom of meditation, as taught by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, accessible to the modern world. Through online and in-person programs, we support people of all cultures, faiths, and levels of experience in learning to meditate, deepen their practice, and cultivate awareness, compassion, and wisdom.

Based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis / St. Paul, Tergar International has grown to a staff of nearly 70 employees and core contractors working across nearly 30 countries, operating in close partnership with our sister organization, Tergar Asia.

Approximately one-third of our budget comes from donor contributions, and our financial health and transparency have earned Tergar a Four-Star, "Give with Confidence" rating from Charity Navigator. As a founding member of our finance function's next chapter, you will play a key role in strengthening the systems that let our mission scale responsibly.

Position Overview

Tergar International is seeking a strategic, hands-on Finance Director to lead and evolve our financial operations during a period of continued growth. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a lean, mission-driven nonprofit environment and enjoys building sound systems and processes from the ground up. You will be responsible for financial reporting and planning, nonprofit compliance, and partnering with the Executive Director and Board on long-term financial strategy - while also staying close to the day-to-day accounting that keeps a global organization running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Lead all core finance functions, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and cash flow management
  • Manage accounting processes and relationships with external bookkeepers, accountants, and auditors
  • Prepare regular financial reports for internal leadership, the Board of Directors, and major donors
  • Oversee the annual audit, IRS Form 990 filing, and other nonprofit compliance requirements
  • Manage restricted and unrestricted fund accounting in line with grant and donor requirements

Strategic Finance

  • Partner with the Executive Director to develop and execute financial strategy aligned with Tergar's mission and growth goals
  • Build and maintain financial models to support program planning, budgeting, and Board conversations
  • Provide insights and analysis to inform staffing plans, program investments, and fundraising priorities
  • Advise on reserve strategy and long-term financial sustainability given Tergar's mixed revenue model of program fees and donations

Operations & Systems

  • Oversee and improve internal financial systems, policies, and internal controls appropriate for a growing global nonprofit
  • Manage the complexity of international finance operations, including multi-currency transactions and cross-border contractor payments
  • Coordinate financial processes and reporting with Tergar Mandala finance function
  • Work closely with program and administrative leads to ensure financial alignment with organizational goals
  • Supervise and mentor finance team staff, currently a small, closely-knit team

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of progressive finance experience, ideally within a nonprofit, mission-driven, or growing/start-up organization
  • Strong grasp of nonprofit accounting, Form 990 preparation, and audit management
  • Experience supporting Board and donor communications, including financial reporting and presentations
  • Track record of building and optimizing financial systems and processes in a lean organization
  • Comfortable toggling between high-level strategy and hands-on, day-to-day execution
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management skills
  • Experience with international or multi-entity financial operations is a plus
  • Genuine alignment with Tergar's mission; no specific religious practice is required, but comfort working within a values-driven, contemplative culture is important

Why Join Tergar International?

  • Be a key partner in strengthening the financial backbone of a growing, globally-reaching nonprofit
  • Collaborate with a mission-driven, compassionate, and entrepreneurial team
  • Contribute to an organization independently recognized for strong financial health and transparency (Charity Navigator Four-Star rating)
  • Competitive nonprofit compensation and comprehensive benefits
  • Flexible, values-aligned work culture supporting both in-person and distributed team members worldwide

Location & Schedule:

  • Remote position: We are open to non-US-based candidates if they meet the criteria.
  • Work Hours: Standard work hours are M-F and are aligned with US Central/Eastern time zones.
  • Requirements:A reliable personal workspace and high-speed internet.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Health insurance, Dental, Vision, Life insurance, STD/LTD, HSA(US-based employees)
  • 200 hours of PTOannually
  • 40 hours of Paid Retreat Time(PRT) annually
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Complimentary access to all Tergar meditation programs
  • Reduced fees for retreats with Mingyur Rinpoche

Application Deadline: July 31st, 2026, or until a suitable candidate is selected.
