The Senior Backup and Data Governance Analyst is responsible for leading enterprise data protection, recovery, governance, and resiliency initiatives across hybrid infrastructure and cloud environments. This role combines deep expertise in backup and recovery technologies with strong knowledge of data governance, data classification, retention, lifecycle management, compliance, disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity planning (BCP).

The successful candidate will design, implement, and support enterprise backup solutions and be a subject matter expert on Veeam and Commvault, and related technologies while establishing governance standards that ensure organizational data is appropriately classified, retained, protected, recoverable, and managed throughout its lifecycle. Working closely with Infrastructure, Security, Risk, Legal, Compliance, and business stakeholders, this role helps ensure enterprise data remains secure, compliant, audit-ready, and aligned with business and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Backup, Recovery & Cyber Resiliency

  • Design, implement, and administer enterprise backup and recovery solutions using Veeam, Commvault, and AvePoint and related technologies.

  • Manage backup operations, including backup jobs, replication, retention policies, capacity planning, performance optimization, and cloud tiering.

  • Implement immutable backup architectures, ransomware protection controls, and cyber recovery solutions.

  • Perform backup validation, restore testing, recovery simulations, and disaster recovery exercises.

  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis for backup, recovery, and data protection incidents.

  • Monitor backup environments and proactively address performance, capacity, compliance, and operational risks.

Data Center & Cloud Platforms

  • Support backup and recovery services across physical and virtual server environments.

  • Administer and protect workloads running on VMware, Windows Server, and Linux platforms.

  • Support data protection strategies across Microsoft Azure, AWS, and GCP environments.

  • Manage backup infrastructure, repositories, storage platforms, cloud object storage, and immutable storage solutions.

  • Recommend and implement resilient backup architectures that eliminate single points of failure.

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

  • Support and lead Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) initiatives.

  • Ensure recovery solutions align with business-defined RTO and RPO requirements.

  • Conduct recovery testing, tabletop exercises, and DR validation activities.

  • Identify resiliency gaps and recommend improvements to strengthen organizational recovery readiness.

Data Governance, Retention & Compliance

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve enterprise data governance frameworks, standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Define and support data classification, ownership, retention, lifecycle management, archival, and defensible deletion strategies.

  • Ensure backup, retention, and recovery practices align with legal, regulatory, privacy, security, and compliance requirements.

  • Partner with business and technology teams to promote effective data stewardship and governance practices across the organization.

  • Support governance initiatives involving Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, cloud platforms, and enterprise data repositories.

  • Work with Security, Legal, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure data governance requirements are incorporated into technology solutions and operational processes.

  • Support and maintain data governance technologies, such as Microsoft Purview, retention policies, records management, and data classification controls.

  • Participate in governance reviews, compliance assessments, audits, and risk management initiatives.

  • Maintain governance documentation, standards, procedures, audit evidence, and compliance records.

Operations & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in incident, problem, and change management activities, including CAB reviews.

  • Develop and maintain runbooks, recovery procedures, governance documentation, DR plans, and technical standards.

  • Automate and improve operational processes using PowerShell and other tools where appropriate.

  • Collaborate with vendors, project teams, security, and infrastructure teams to support enterprise initiatives.

  • Mentor junior team members and promote best practices for backup, recovery, data management, and governance.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise backup and recovery, data governance, infrastructure resiliency, or related technology disciplines.

  • Advanced hands-on experience with:

    • Veeam Backup & Replication

    • Commvault

    • AvePoint

  • Strong experience supporting:

    • VMware environments

    • Physical and virtual server infrastructure

    • Windows Server and Linux environments

    • Cloud environments

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, and GCP.

  • Experience leading backup validation, restore testing, disaster recovery, and recovery readiness initiatives.

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Data governance frameworks and best practices

    • Data classification and stewardship

    • Data retention and lifecycle management

    • Compliance and audit requirements

    • Records management and defensible deletion

    • Ransomware recovery and immutable backup strategies

  • Experience with Microsoft Purview, Microsoft 365 governance, or similar compliance and information governance platforms.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting enterprise information governance or data management programs.

  • Experience with Dell Data Domain, HPE StoreOnce, or similar enterprise storage platforms.

  • Familiarity with container or Kubernetes backup technologies.

  • Certifications such as:

    • VMCE / VMware

    • Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP

    • Commvault

    • ITIL

    • Data Governance, Information Management, or Compliance certifications

  • The salary range for this role is $95,000 - $110,000
