Job description

Job Title: Program Assistant

About NNSC

The National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a center that supports cities in the United States and around the world in implementing evidence-based approaches to violence prevention. For over two decades, NNSC has worked to improve public safety, minimize arrest and incarceration, enhance police legitimacy, and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities it serves. We believe that great ideas and practices come from a mix of minds, backgrounds, and experiences.

About the Role

The Program Assistant will provide programmatic, data, and administrative support to the NNSC team as we work with partner organizations to implement and sustain the NNSC model in their jurisdictions. The Program Assistant will help the team stay organized, track implementation progress, maintain high-quality data and documentation, and coordinate the logistics that support effective engagement with partner sites and key stakeholders.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Program Assistance and Documentation

  • Coordinate planning, documentation, and follow-up for advising calls, site visits, trainings, and other engagements with partner sites.
  • Assist with organizing and maintaining program materials, resources, and other programmatic information including: tools for tracking key measures of strategy implementation, outcomes, challenges, and innovations across partner sites.
  • Prepare timely written materials associated with sites and for the organization.
  • Help document lessons learned, promising practices, and innovations emerging from partner sites.
  • Maintain and update the programmatic Wiki and other internal knowledge-management resources.
  • Support the development and posting of programmatic content for social media and other communications channels.

Logistical Support

  • Support scheduling, communications, meeting preparation, note-taking, and follow-up for programmatic activities both internally and with government, community, and law enforcement leaders; partner organizations; researchers and academics; and other stakeholders.
  • Provide logistical support and travel planning for site visits, meetings, trainings, conferences, and other events: including booking travel for internal and external travelers and facilitating reimbursement process.

What Youโ€™ll Need

Experience

  • Commitment to reducing violence, building trust, and transforming public safety, demonstrated through lived experience and/or professional or volunteer experience as someone who has been directly impacted by violence and/or the criminal justice system, and/or relevant subject matter experience (e.g. advocate, violence interrupter, activist, law enforcement, etc.). Preferred.
  • 2โ€“3 years of experience providing administrative and program support, including managing calendars and correspondence, taking meeting notes, coordinating virtual and in-person events and travel, and maintaining accurate programmatic records and data.
  • Experience working with community members and leaders, community-based organizations, government officials, service providers, and/or law enforcement agencies. Preferred.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets and maintaining or organizing data is a plus.

Skills

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including: confidence, tact, and nuance across a range of audiences and settings
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation and to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to ask thoughtful clarifying questions, identify issues, and seek guidance when needed.
  • Ability to focus on work priorities and maintain self-care and sustainable work habits.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook), Google sheets, and ZOOM.

Education

  • Possess a Bachelorโ€™s degree in disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

  • Possess a combination of education and experience that provide you with the knowledge equivalent to a bachelor's degree

OR

  • Possess 6 years of appropriate experience that demonstrates acquired knowledge or equivalent to a bachelor's degree.

Location and Travel

  • This role will be remote but will involve some amount of internal and external in-person meetings.
  • 10% or less - You may be expected to travel up to 10% of the time for this position
