Job description

Position Function:
Assist with laboratory procedures at the Student Health Center. Collect specimens and perform laboratory tests on samples.
Salary Grade: 09
Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Receives patients and answers phone calls.
2. Instructs patients in collection of specimens.
3. Collects capillary and venous human blood specimens.
4. Processes and prepares clinical laboratory specimens.
5. Performs computer data entry of tests and generates statements.
6. Operates electrocardiograph equipment.
7. Orders and stocks supplies.
8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
1 year experience directly related to duties listed above.

Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology and infection control techniques. Basic computer skills. Previous working knowledge with laboratory information and/or health information systems. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory and/or medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc. Exposure to needles and body fluids.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping/kneeling,
crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
