Job description
This position requires on-site presence at least 2 days per week, and sometimes more, at a confidential Seattle location. This position is not fully remote.
API Chaya empowers survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking to gain safety, connection, and wellness. We build power by educating and mobilizing South Asian, Asian, Pacific Islander, and all immigrant communities to end exploitation, creating a world where all people can heal and thrive. This work is done through organizing our communities to end violence and oppression, as well as through support services for survivors. We work in diverse communities, including immigrants and refugees, young people, LGBTQ, faith-based, various ethnic and cultural groups, and people with disabilities. API Chaya is seeking a Disability Justice Community Organizer to mobilize communities through culturally-specific projects towards building skills and leadership of community members to intervene in and respond to gender-based violence in ways that also seek to address root causes. This person must have experience organizing within chronically ill and disabled communities of color, and have a commitment to API Chaya's mission.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Community Outreach and Organizing
- Build relationships with community leaders and organizations to cultivate effective partnerships towards long-term community responses to violence
- Conduct monthly outreach activities to communities not currently engaged with API Chaya
- Recruit and engage volunteers in a monthly collaborative workgroup focused on community organizing projects
- Collaborate with staff and peer educators to create and implement survivor leadership development curriculum
- Work with API Chaya's community organizing team, volunteers, and program participants to develop and conduct community education trainings and Natural Helpers trainings grounded in API Chaya's vision to build skills and leadership in community solutions to sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking
- Work with API Chaya's community organizing team, volunteers, and program participants to coordinate community outreach, mobilization, organizing, survivor leadership, as well as emergent community projects and campaigns
- Participate in community and coalition meetings relevant to areas of work
- Complete relevant documentation and reporting of program activities, including monthly reports and assistance with grant reporting
Additional duties may include:
- Coordinate survivor-led projects developing skills in anti-violence organizing and education for Deaf and disabled immigrant survivors
- Form a steering committee of chronically ill and disabled survivors to create trainings and implement curriculum on the dynamics of sexual and domestic violence, and building loving and equitable relationship skills
- Be part of developing API Chaya's long-term partnership and co-referral model with organizations including but not limited to: Disability Rights WA, The Arc of King County, Long Term Care Ombuds, and Open Doors for Multicultural Families
- Lead internal development of greater accessibility for all our programs and services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Understands and supports API Chaya's mission, vision, and values with commitment to incorporate such values in day-to-day work
- A minimum of 1 year paid or volunteer experience in community organizing within, and a deep demonstrated commitment to, marginalized communities of color, immigrant communities, and survivors of violence in the Puget Sound area
- Understanding of Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asisan cultures; familiarity with conditions and issues impacting violence and exploitation in our communities; familiarity with conditions and issues impacting immigrant and refugee communities including understanding how the dynamics of domestic and sexual abuse/violence play out within marginalized communities of color
- Commitment to anti-oppression, including anti-racism, and recognizing the intersections of gender-based and state-based violence
- Ability to set priorities, problem-solve, manage multiple projects and deadlines, work in a flexible and evolving environment, willing and able to work evenings and weekends when needed
- Ability to maintain a cooperative, and professional demeanor with participants, partner organizations, volunteers/interns, staff/board, donors, consultants, and members of the public
- Sincere commitment to working as a team member while also being able to work independently
- At least 1 year of experience supporting access needs for clients and community members including but not limited to: Communication access (ASL interpretation, CART, or language interpretation), Physical access (wheelchair-accessible spaces and transportation considerations), Sensory or cognitive access (scent-free environments, quiet spaces, plain-language materials)
- Capacity to work on-site, hybrid, remotely, and engage deeply virtually
Other Desired Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of sexual assault and domestic violence within an anti-oppression framework
- Understanding of transformative justice and community accountability frameworks
- Experience working with diverse communities (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, age, gender, class, etc.)
- Great public communication skills with experience in planning and facilitating trainings
- A valid driver's license or access to reliable transportation
- Bilingual language skills and previous work in a multicultural, community-based organization preferred, but not required

COMPENSATION
Based on experience, part-time 0.80 FTE (28hrs/wk) compensation for this position ranges between $67,786 -$79,083 DOE.Eligible for benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as paid vacation starting at 2 weeks per year, 11 national holidays, self-care days, and sick leave. API Chaya also offers a transportation stipend or ORCA card, wellness package, and a retirement contribution. Some benefits available only to employees working 20+ hours per week. The number of hours worked per week is negotiable up to 30 hours.
