What is community media?

Community media are forms of media created and managed by local communities to serve their specific interests, needs, and voices. Unlike mainstream media, community media outlets—such as local radio stations, newspapers, and online platforms—are often non-profit and focus on participatory communication. They empower residents by providing a platform for local issues, culture, and dialogue, fostering community engagement and social change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a community media role, and why are they important?

To excel in a Community Media role, you need strong communication skills, media production knowledge, and a background in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with digital editing software, content management systems, and social media platforms is typically required. Creativity, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to engage diverse audiences are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable effective storytelling, facilitate community engagement, and ensure the representation of local voices in media content.

How does a community media professional typically collaborate with local organizations and residents?

Community Media professionals frequently partner with local organizations, schools, and residents to produce content that reflects community interests and needs. Collaboration often involves facilitating workshops, coordinating interviews, and gathering feedback to ensure diverse voices are represented. Building trust and maintaining open communication are essential, as these partnerships help create relevant and impactful programming. This role requires strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to community engagement.

Chief Community & Marketing Officer (CCMO) - Co-Founder

HireScale

San Francisco, CA • On-site

Full-time

Job description

Project Overview

HireScale is seeking a Chief Community & Marketing Officer (CCMO) to join as a founding executive and equity co-founder responsible for building the most influential community in the Future of Work, Talent, and HRTech ecosystem.

This is a high-impact, externally facing leadership role designed for a proven operator, creator, and connector who already has a strong personal brand and distribution engine—ideally through an established podcast, newsletter, and large-scale LinkedIn audience and network within Talent Acquisition, HRTech, SaaS, and workforce innovation spaces.

HireScale has already established its marketplace model, brand foundation, and executive core team. The next phase of growth depends on building category authority, community density, and distribution leverage at scale. This role owns that entirely.

You will be responsible for turning HireScale into a category-defining brand and ecosystem by building a high-signal community of founders, HR leaders, operators, consultants, and AI-native talent shaping the future of work.

This is not a traditional marketing role. It is a co-founder-level community, media, and ecosystem-building role where audience, trust, and influence directly drive marketplace liquidity, brand authority, and revenue acceleration.

You will operate at the intersection of content, community, partnerships, and growth, building the narrative layer that powers everything HireScale does—from talent acquisition and client demand to marketplace credibility and industry leadership.

A strong expectation is that you already have:

  • A recognized voice in HRTech / Talent / Future of Work
  • A distributed audience via LinkedIn, podcasting, or newsletter
  • An active network of operators, founders, and enterprise talent leaders

The goal is to build a category-defining community engine that becomes the primary distribution and trust layer for the HireScale ecosystem.

Scope of Work & Core Responsibilities

  • Build and lead HireScale’s global community across Talent, HRTech, SaaS, and Future of Work ecosystems
  • Own brand narrative, positioning, and thought leadership strategy across all channels
  • Leverage existing podcast, newsletter, and LinkedIn presence to drive awareness, engagement, and inbound demand
  • Grow and activate a high-value network of HR leaders, founders, operators, and independent consultants
  • Design and execute content strategy across podcasts, newsletters, social media, and live events
  • Develop community-led growth loops that directly contribute to marketplace supply and demand
  • Build partnerships with HRTech companies, SaaS platforms, accelerators, and talent networks
  • Host and scale events (virtual and in-person) to deepen ecosystem engagement and brand authority
  • Collaborate with CRO and COO to align community growth with revenue and operational outcomes
  • Establish HireScale as a category-defining voice in the Future of Work and AI-enabled talent economy
  • Drive top-of-funnel influence through content distribution, storytelling, and audience engagement
  • Create repeatable systems for audience growth, engagement, and conversion into marketplace participation
  • Serve as a public-facing executive voice for HireScale across media, conferences, and industry forums

Engagement Brief

This is a founding executive CCMO role focused on building the community, media engine, and brand authority layer of HireScale. Success is defined by audience growth, ecosystem influence, inbound marketplace demand, and category leadership in the Future of Work space.

  • Target Outcomes: A category-defining community and media ecosystem that drives awareness, trust, and demand for HireScale’s marketplace. Establish strong inbound pipelines from HR leaders, founders, and consultants through content, community, and network effects.
  • Duration: Full-time founding role (3–5 year exit horizon)
  • Commitment: Chief Community & Marketing Officer / Co-Founder role
  • Compensation: Significant equity ownership (up to 20%) + performance-based incentives tied to ecosystem growth and company valuation
  • Start Date: ASAP

Portfolio Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a founder, executive, or senior operator in community, marketing, or growth roles within HRTech, SaaS, or Future of Work ecosystems
  • Established personal brand with active podcast, newsletter, or equivalent content platform
  • Large and engaged LinkedIn network (strong influence within Talent Acquisition, HRTech, or SaaS ecosystems required)
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale communities, audiences, or category-defining brands
  • Experience driving measurable growth through content, community, and distribution strategies
  • Strong network of HR leaders, founders, operators, consultants, or talent ecosystem participants
  • Proven ability to convert audience and influence into business outcomes (leads, partnerships, or revenue impact)
  • Public-facing presence (speaking, writing, podcasting, or thought leadership strongly preferred)
