Job description

Position Summary:
FACETS is hiring a mission-driven Education and Community Development Advocate (ECD). The ECD Advocate works within the Education and Community Development (ECD) department, which assesses the needs of diverse populations residing in public housing communities in Fairfax County. Education and Community Development (ECD) advocates will engage clients in areas such as, case management and adult/youth programming that work to serve and better strengthen the community’s abilities to walk up and out of poverty. ECD advocates will also be responsible for overseeing volunteer staff and ensuring the effective growth, learning and development of any interns placed within the department and their respective community centers.
The position is visible to the general public and is subject to interruptions from walk-in traffic and telephone calls. High standards of courtesy, performance and respect for confidentiality are essential. Independent judgment is required for appropriate decision making, problem solving and priority setting.

FACETS is a non-profit organization that opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. We meet their emergency needs through our wrap around services and community partnerships, and help individuals and families experience safe and stable housing after years of uncertainty and instability. We strive to ensure that every person in our community has a place they can call home. Here at FACETS, every team member plays a role in making a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide case management, including client assessment, individualized client action plan, and crisis intervention to families in public housing; the core goal of case management is to promote client self-sufficiency.
  • Maintains, completes, and archives all client data/records within established agency guidelines, and turns all assignments/reports into Team Leader in a timely and professional manner.
  • Develops and implements adult and youth programming activities to meet the specific needs of the community, while evaluating the effectiveness of such programs and addressing the gaps within them.
  • Plan and coordinate equitable and unique events that encourage and promote the mission of the organization (i.e. back to school event, Thanksgiving food drive, sibling shop, AAB events etc.)
  • Provide assistance to walk-in clients during scheduled walk-in case management periods throughout the week.
  • Train and support volunteers on relevant program material to ensure high program standards and safety.
  • Oversees interns as their Task Supervisor and ensures that all learning goals and opportunities are being met.
  • Represents FACETS and the ECD program in the community, in accord with Agency Mission, Vision, and Code of Ethics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and agreed upon by SCDA or Team Leader.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Human services, or related field.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/Arabic) is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be flexible to work across in Annandale, Centreville, Fairfax city when required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, good driving record, and personal car insurance.
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van.
  • Must pass criminal background and Child Protective Services background checks.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including 3 annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.

Salary Range:
  • $45,000 - $50,000 annually.
