Description Title: Lecturer, CC (Biological Sciences - Botany) Position Number: Pending Hiring Unit: Science and Mathematics Division Location: Kaua'i Community College Date Posted: June 18, 2024 Closing Date: Continuous Salary Information: Minimum $1,911 per credit hour. Rate may be subject to change. Full Time/Part Time: Part Time Temporary/Permanent: Temporary Other Conditions: Part-time, for placement in lecturer candidate pool, contingent on availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.
Day, evening, or Saturday offerings, on- and off-campus including but not limited to Early College, and/or synchronous and/or asynchronous online sections may be part of assigned workload. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct courses in Botany under general supervision. Manage greenhouse and field preparations, in oversight of students' work, to include but not limited to, preparing the soil, install irrigation, and weed and pest control under supervision of senior faculty.
Maintain office hours of at least one hour per week for each course taught. Prepare required course outlines, syllabi, and reports related to teaching and student progress. Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area under supervision of the division chairperson.
Collect student and peer evaluations and complete a self-assessment of teaching effectiveness. Complete instructional assignments which may involve day, evening, early morning, weekend, outreach (such as Early College), and/or distance education classes. Adhere to community college principles and philosophy.
Work effectively with a diverse student and community population in accordance with the Board of Regents Policy 4.207 III.F.1 and college practice of the open-admission concept. Minimum Qualifications 1. Master's degree in Botany
All degrees must be earned from an accredited institution. If applicants are not available, those not meeting minimum qualifications may be considered on a exception basis. Desirable Qualifications Ability to conduct courses in Ethnobotany.
Knowledge and application of plant tissue culture. Successful community college teaching experience. Successful multi-cultural teaching experience.
Demonstrated success serving as a mentor, advisor, or team leader. Have a supportive attitude toward student learning and ability to create a nurturing classroom environment for students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrated understanding of issues related to Native Hawaiians or other indigenous populations and the local community, including Hawai`i's unique economic, political, business, and cultural environment.
Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities.
