Job description

Application Deadline: August 14th, 2026
Matters Graph is a strategy consultancy built around a single objective: to deliver superb evidence-based advice to help our clients acquire and build stronger businesses. Our clients are investment professionals and operating executives at top-tier Private Equity firms, as well as Corporate Development, M&A and Strategy leaders and C-suite Leaders from the largest global corporations.
Who is Matters Graph?
Matters Graph employs best-practice methods to develop and pressure test investment theses, and help clients build, deploy and oversee effective value generation plans:
  • Matters Graph is a business strategy consulting firm specializing in growth strategy and transaction (M&A) support
  • We partner with private equity firms, Fortune 500 companies, and growth-stage businesses to answer high-stakes strategic questions
  • Our team brings rigorous research, structured analysis, and clear storytelling to help clients make confident, data-driven decisions
  • We pride ourselves on a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture where team members contribute from day one
  • Located in DuPont Circle, Washington, DC, Matters Graph combines a local presence with national and global client reach
  • Externs and associates alike are exposed to a broad range of industries - from healthcare and technology to consumer goods and industrials
  • We emphasize professional development, mentorship, and hands-on learning, ensuring our team grows alongside the firm
  • At Matters Graph, we value intellectual curiosity, humility, and impact, making us an exciting place to launch or explore a career in consulting

Am I a good candidate?
Applications for this Externship are competitive. We are seeking candidates who have or meet the following:
  • You must be currently enrolled, in good standing, with a partner educational institution. Currently, this is limited to Howard University students only (there are no Degree- or Program-specific limitations)
  • A track record of academic excellence, including a bachelor's degree from a leading institution
  • A deep passion for business and outstanding intellectual curiosity
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analysis skills
  • Great team working abilities, with a positive and collaborative mind-set
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • A desire to build a long-term career as a professional consultant
  • Fluency in English with strong verbal and written communication skills, with additional languages also beneficial
  • Authorization to work in the USA

What does this Externship offer?
Our goal is to ensure that this position is a "win-win" for Matters Graph and Externship Participants (students). If selected to participate in the Externship, you will receive training and then be assigned to a specific live client engagement. We expect this experience to be both client-value-adding and immensely educational and skills-building for you. While the day-to-day tasks will differ depending on the phase and needs of an individual engagement, the externship overall will offer:
  • Hands-on consulting experience: Work alongside Matters Graph Consultants on real client projects, gaining direct exposure to strategy and analysis in practice
  • Mentorship and learning: Be paired with a dedicated Consultant mentor who will guide your development and share insights into a consulting career
  • Skill building: Strengthen analytical, research, and communication skills that will serve you in consulting and beyond
  • Professional exposure: Build your resume with meaningful, project-based work at a boutique consulting firm in the heart of Washington, DC
  • Flexibility for students: Balance academics and professional experience with ~20 hours per week, and flexibility during exam-heavy periods

What are the responsibilities of an Externship participant?
  • Commit to approximately 20 hours per week on-site at Matters Graph's DuPont Circle office (with schedule flexibility around academic exam periods)
  • Partner directly with a Matters Graph Consultant, providing day-to-day support on active engagements and gaining exposure to the consulting process through mentorship and shadowing opportunities
  • Take on a mix of administrative and project-support responsibilities (e.g., scheduling, materials prep, documentation), which may be more routine than full-time Associate duties, and are designed to build a strong foundation for future consulting roles
  • Support client engagement teams with business strategy, market analysis, and problem-solving research
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform consulting projects and deliver data-driven insights
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute creative ideas to solve complex client challenges
  • Research industries, competitors, and emerging trends to support strategic recommendations
  • Engage in professional development by learning consulting frameworks, structured problem solving, and client communication best practices
  • Collaborate with associates, managers, and partners to gain exposure to the consulting workflow from scoping to delivery
  • Uphold professionalism, confidentiality, and Matters Graph's values while working in a fast-paced, client-focused environment

How long does the Externship last?
  • The position is planned to be a rotating semester position, though strong performers may be invited to continue in subsequent semesters
  • We are still determining the size of each Externship cycle group, but expect between 2 to 3 participants at a time

Apply through completing this online form. As noted, the Externship is competitive and Matters Graph has a robust screening process, including a resume screen; interview that combines a shortened consulting case and behavioral assessment; a set of online assessments; a unique M&A-specific case; and finally, an on-site "super-day and orientation." Our promise: you will learn about yourself and grow as a professional through the application process, let alone the immense learning available to those selected as Analysts. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Matters Graph!
