Job description

Sedgman is currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our growing team in Vancouver BC. 

The ideal candidate will have mechanical design experience working on mining/heavy industrial type projects, from conceptual design and studies through to project completion; they will have strong knowledge and experience specifically in mechanical process equipment, platework and piping. 

This individual will be responsible for a variety of tasks, ranging from engineering design, equipment selection, and on-site support and quality control. 

He / She will have delivered engineering services at an intermediate level, including the ability to complete technical specifications and detailed planning, recommending changes to specification or design engineering processes as appropriate.

 Key Responsibilities will include:                          

  • Deliver mechanical and piping design across multiple sustaining capital projects.

  • Develop designs for mechanical equipment, process platework and pipework.

  • Oversee layout drafting and 3D modelling through basic and detailed design phases

  • Contribute to proposals, scope development, and continuous design improvements.

  • Design of piping systems, process and mechanical equipment including design and selection of static and rotating equipment

  • Define and recommend design methods, specifications and performance of functional requirements for new projects. 

  • Undertake or supervise the preparation of feasibility studies, surveys and reports, design layouts, PFD's, P&ID's, specifications, bill of quantities, materials lists and cost estimates. 

  • Ensure engineering designs follow the standard Sedgman design workflows, systems and procedures; Continuous improvement of design systems used by the organisation. 

  • Prepare technical specifications, datasheets, requisitions and perform technical bid evaluations of process and mechanical equipment

  • Provide engineering support to the project teams in line with management direction whilst maximising individual and teams utilisation. 

  • Produce and monitor engineering work hour budgets during concept, study, tender and detailed design stage as required. 

  • Ensure project time and cost KPI's are met - monitor effectiveness of designs, scheduling of work, resource requirements and review compliance with project execution plan (schedule) and client expectations. 

  • Provide technical support to the team of piping designers for design/basic engineering during construction phases.  

  • Project Manager for discipline lead projects as assigned

  • Build and maintain client relationships and respond to client requests, travel to various client sites, attend project meetings and conduct field reviews as required

  • Always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites

What are we looking for?  Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (piping design experience is highly desired)

  • Will have between 5 - 7 years of relevant experience as a Mechanical engineer on mining, energy or heavy industrial projects.

  • Will be a registered engineer with EGBC (P. Engineer in British Columbia); or eligible to register; 

  • Relevant experience in the design of process piping, preparation of equipment datasheets and specifications; Knowledge of pipe stress analysis considered an asset

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Plant3D; ASME Code knowledge considered an asset.

  • Ability to safely and effectively self-manage time, priorities and activities

  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal skills; will be self-motivated, quick to deliver on projects

  • Strong organizational skills, technical competence and attention to detail 

  • Will have excellent communication skills, strong, oral, verbal and written English; French is considered an asset.

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada without sponsorship
