How much do commission stylist jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for commission stylist in Arizona is $19.35, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.85 and $23.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commission stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Stylist, you need a solid background in cosmetology, hairstyling, and up-to-date beauty trends, usually supported by a state cosmetology license. Familiarity with salon management software, booking systems, and various hair care products is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and creativity help build client relationships and deliver personalized styling. These skills are essential for ensuring client satisfaction, repeat business, and professional growth within a competitive salon environment.

What are some common challenges commission stylists face when building their client base, and how can they overcome them?

One common challenge Commission Stylists encounter is attracting and retaining a steady stream of clients, especially when starting out in a new salon or area. Building trust and rapport takes time, and competition among stylists can be high. To overcome this, stylists often leverage social media to showcase their work, participate in salon promotions, and provide exceptional customer service to encourage referrals and repeat visits. Networking with local businesses and continually improving technical skills can also help establish a loyal clientele and grow professionally.

What is a commission stylist?

Commission Stylists are professional hair stylists or beauty consultants who earn their income based on a percentage of the services and products they sell, rather than a fixed hourly wage or salary. This compensation model motivates stylists to build a loyal clientele and upsell salon products and services. Commission Stylists typically work in salons, and their earnings can vary depending on their experience, skill level, and the volume of clients they serve. Many stylists prefer this structure because it offers the potential for higher earnings compared to hourly pay.

How much do commission stylists make?

Commission stylists typically earn a base salary plus a percentage of their sales, with total earnings often ranging from $20,000 to $60,000 annually depending on experience, location, and clientele. Top performers in high-end salons can earn significantly more through commissions and tips. Success in this role depends on skills, customer service, and sales ability.

What is the difference between Commission Stylist vs Booth Rent Stylist?

AspectCommission StylistBooth Rent Stylist

Work EnvironmentTypically works in a salon with employer supportOperates independently within a rented booth

Understanding these differences helps stylists choose the best work arrangement for their career goals.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
