Job description


Job Summary
Performs waste package certification activities associated with the packaging, inspection, characterization support, certification, and shipment preparation of radioactive waste. Ensures waste packages comply with applicable Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), Department of Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and site procedural requirements. Supports waste packaging operations through container inspections, waste package certification documentation, manifest preparation, radiological shipping survey support, and coordination with Waste Management, Radiation Protection, Engineering, and Operations personnel.
Job Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Has the cabilities to performs waste package certification activities in accordance with applicable Waste Management procedures.
  • Conducts inspections during waste packaging activities to verify compliance with approved Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), waste profiles, and packaging requirements.
  • Performs waste container inspections and documents package condition, integrity, and compliance requirements.
  • Supports radioactive waste characterization activities through review of package loading records, characterization data, and supporting documentation.
  • Assists with waste manifest preparation, data entry, and verification of package contents, weights, dimensions, radionuclide inventories, and disposal information.
  • Coordinates with Radiation Protection personnel to obtain required dose rate, contamination, and shipping survey information.
  • Supports certification of radioactive waste packages for transportation and disposal.
  • Verifies package markings, labels, placards, blocking and bracing, and shipping documentation comply with applicable DOT and site requirements.
  • Interfaces with Waste Management, Radiation Protection, Engineering, Operations, disposal facilities, and transportation providers to ensure compliant waste packaging and shipment preparation.
  • Assists with procedure reviews, revisions, and checklist updates to improve packaging, certification, and transportation compliance.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation associated with waste package certification activities.

Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements Education
  • Associate's degree required or equivalent experience
Certifications
  • 40 hour Hazwoper training
  • DOT Hazmat (49 CFR 172 Subpart H)
  • Q Clearance, the ability to obtain a Q clearance, or the ability to obtain site unescorted access
Required Experience
  • 1 year of experience
Preferred Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in radioactive waste packaging, transportation, waste certification, radiological controls, or nuclear operations

Required and Desired Skills
  • Knowledge of DOT hazardous material transportation requirements.
  • Knowledge of NRC radioactive waste requirements.
  • Ability to interpret Waste Acceptance Criteria and waste profiles.
  • Ability to review technical documentation and verify regulatory compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and waste tracking software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in field environments.
  • Ability to interface with project personnel, regulators, transportation providers, and disposal facilities.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, push up to 25 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
  • Ability to sit, walk and bend/stoop
  • Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Ability to read small text, documents and procedures

  • Ability to work on slippery/uneven walking surfaces
