What you will do

In this vital role you will report to the Amgen Ventures, Business Development Leadership Team and may be based in South San Francisco, CA; Cambridge, MA; or Thousand Oaks, CA. Other locations may also be considered. The Manager, Amgen Ventures, will support the Head of Amgen Ventures as well as the BioVentures and Digital Venture Leads to comprehensively evaluate and build supportive business cases, and make recommendations to the Ventures Investment Committee for private equity investments. This role may be involved in deal sourcing, negotiation and close, and may play a role in Ventures portfolio management.

Responsibilities
  • Support Amgen BioVentures and Digital Ventures leads in coordinating in‑depth scientific and business diligence to develop a strong investment thesis, including soliciting technical input from our organization and external subject matter experts.
  • Draft informal and formal investment recommendations for presentation to the research divisions Ventures Fund Investment Committee.
  • Assist with all aspects of the deal process and definitive document preparation where needed.
  • Assist with post‑deal management including support of management, company strategy, and follow‑on investment where needed.
  • Assist in the management of LP relationships.
  • Manage daily operations and tracking of active deal diligence, working with teammates in the scientific, finance, venture capital, legal, project management, and communications groups. Participate in deal negotiations as needed and shepherd deals through approval processes to closure.
  • Assist with other fund administrative or operational activities as required by the Amgen Ventures Leadership Team.

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree
  • Or Master’s degree and 2 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience
  • Or Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience
  • Or Associate’s degree and 8 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience
  • Or high school diploma / GED and 10 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Biotechnology or Life Sciences
  • Two years in an operational venture capital role, or at least three years in a biopharmaceutical industry business development role.
  • Experience evaluating and executing business development deals is preferred but not required, as is a general understanding of equity investing.
  • A demonstrated track record of high performance, academically and professionally.
  • The ability to communicate well, both orally and in written form.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of self‑awareness; preferred personality traits include industriousness, flexibility, and a high capacity for teamwork.
  • Working knowledge of software platforms including Microsoft systems (e.g., Licensing Tracker, SharePoint, MS Teams, MS Office), Smartsheet, Tableau, Miro, etc.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted on our website. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
