Position Summary
Responsible, under the direction of the Sheriff, for the enforcement of the laws of the State of Minnesota which include, however; not limited to, the apprehension of criminals, prevention of criminal activity and protection of property and life.
Sheriff's Deputies also assist area police, fire and ambulance services when requested or directed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of all residents in Brown County.
  • Patrol the County, enforce traffic laws, and maintain positive law enforcement presence throughout the county.
  • Prevent and detect commission of crimes - constantly being aware of potential crimes/public safety hazards and taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Answer all calls and complaints, investigate crimes, motor vehicle accidents, boat, snowmobile, ATV, farm, and industrial accidents; collect evidence, prepare reports, prioritize assignments.
  • Assist local police, fire, and ambulance services.
  • Drug recognition and interdiction.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Serve court orders, documents, arrest and/or search warrants.
  • Boat and snowmobile patrol. ERU team.
  • Transport criminals and mentally ill persons.
  • Predatory Offender Registration Checks.
  • Other duties as assigned or apparent:
    • Attends trainings and meetings.
    • Maintains equipment and patrol vehicles

Qualifications
Education:
  • Associate Degree in Law Enforcement andP.O.S.T. license (Peace Officer License required by the State of Minnesota) eligible. A minimum of2 years' experience as a peace officer, reserve peace officer, correctional officer, military police, 9-1-1 dispatcher, security officer, or in a detox/detention facility is preferred.
  • Obtain all required State Licenses/Certifications.
Requirements:
  • Peace Officer License from Minnesota (P.O.S.T.) Board or are eligible to be licensed.
  • Class D MN Driver's license.
  • Must be certified in Firearms/Use of Force, Taser, Defensive Tactics, First Aid/First Responder Certified, Radar Certified, Defensive Driving, Pursuit Driving, Pursuit Intervention Driving Technique (PIT), Use of OC/Mace, Use of ASP (Baton), DUI detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFTS's). Deputies must attend refresher courses in each of these to keep certification current.
  • Other POST Board required courses include Police Ethics, Search and Seizure, Warrantless Arrests, Warrant Arrests, Search Warrants, Implied Consent, Civil Liability, Child Sex Abuse Investigation, Civil Commitments and Vulnerable Adults, Orders for Protection/Harassment Restraining Orders, Domestic Abuse, General Investigations, Serving and Enforcing Orders for Protection, Harassment Restraining Orders (HRO's) and Hazardous Martials. These courses are offered every few years by the MN County Attorneys Association and deputies are required to attend as mandated by the POST Board.
  • Sheriff Deputies are certified in "Hot Files"/NCIC with certification every two years NCIC.
  • Must obtain and maintain necessary licenses and certifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Significant knowledge of local, state and federal statutes, laws and ordinances relevant to department operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of civil and criminal court proceedings.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern law enforcement methods and procedures including rules of evidence, forensic interviewing, investigative techniques, report writing, and documentation.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and have strong positive public relations skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of geography, street and highway system, and location of significant areas of attention.
  • Ability to maintain effective public relations and deal with hostile or aggressive persons.
  • Skill in use of law enforcement equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to apply professional judgement within overall goals.
  • Ability to apply widely varied complex and significant variables, requiring analytical ability and inductive thinking in adapting policies, procedures, and methods to fit unusual and complex situations.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with frequent interaction to carry out organizational programs on matters requiring cooperation, explanation and persuasion; or work requiring enforcement of laws, ordinances, policies and procedures.
Equipment Utilized:
  • Office equipment and computers, patrol vehicles including squad car, ATV, law enforcement equipment and tools including firearms and medical equipment.
  • ERU/ SWAT Equipment: Ceramic bullet-proof vests Kevlar vests, Kevlar helmet, Haz-Mat clothing, boots, gloves, and masks, Camouflage uniforms, Cold weather gear, Rain gear, Bullet-proof face shield, Fire resistant Kevlar gloves and facemasks, Explosive eye and ear protection, Chemical agent equipment (gas masks, aerosol CS gas, 12 gauge CS rounds, 37mm guns) Surveillance equipment, Night vision equipment, Radio headsets, Long-range and medium-range rifles, Submachine guns, shotguns, explosive distraction devices, ballistic rated body bunkers, bolt cutters, portable video search equipment, and night vision optical devices and other equipment as needed.
  • Boat and Water Equipment: Three boats Rescue hooks, drag bars GPS Equipment, depth finder portable light system, portable generator, life jackets, scuba gear, (3 deputies certified) , fire extinguisher, shovels, communication system for scuba water rescue.
  • Snowmobile equipment: snowmobile, snowmobile suit/ helmet, handheld radio, rescue sled, off highway vehicle.

Health Insurance
Full-Time employees and employees working 30 or more hours per week may choose between single or family coverage. Eligibility begins on the first day of the month after the date of active employment.
The County has designated a base plan which is a high deductible plan with an HSA option. The County contributes monthly towards the cost of the health plan premiums with a semi-annual county contribution into employee's HSA for the single or the family coverage plan. For regular part time employees working 30+ hours/week year around, the County will pay 75% of the county share of single coverage (base plan) which may be applied towards family coverage and also contribute 75% of the employer HSA contribution.
Life Insurance
Full-Time Employees are provided with the following term life insurance benefit at no cost to them. Regular part-time employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for this benefit with County paying 75% of premium. Eligibility begins on the first day of the month after the date of active employment.
