Controller – Homebuilder

Location: Chantilly, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for a growing residential homebuilder based in Chantilly, Virginia. This is a key leadership role responsible for maintaining the integrity of the company's financial reporting, overseeing accounting operations, improving processes, and partnering with executive leadership to support strategic growth.

The ideal candidate has strong construction or homebuilding accounting experience, exceptional leadership skills, and a proactive approach to financial management.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job cost accounting.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close process.
  • Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable tax regulations.
  • Monitor construction costs, work-in-progress schedules, and profitability by project and community.
  • Oversee banking relationships, financing activities, and lender reporting.
  • Coordinate annual audits and work with external CPA firms.
  • Establish and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team.
  • Partner with ownership and operational leaders to provide financial analysis and decision support.
  • Manage sales commissions, subcontractor payments, and construction draws.
  • Assist with strategic planning, acquisitions, and business growth initiatives.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 3+ years in a Controller or Accounting Manager leadership role.
  • Residential homebuilding or construction accounting experience required.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and WIP reporting.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and managing month-end close.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
