Job description

Description This is a professional planner position, working primarily with cases and applicants going before Planning Commission and County Council. Applicants must possess a thorough understanding of land use planning and land development processes and exhibit excellent interpersonal relation skills with the ability to convey verbal, written, and graphic communications in a highly professional manner. SALARY RANGE: $54,308 - $61,172 (Estimated Annual Salary) OPEN UNTIL FILLED, APPLICATION REVIEW BEGINS IMMEDIATELY Duties and Responsibilities This position performs professional planning and zoning duties for the County, as assigned.

Duties include, but are not limited to: supporting the Planning Commission and Council functions of the department pertaining to rezoning and ordinance amendments, including preparing and presenting cases and other information to the Planning Commission, County Council, and other boards or commissions as needed; explaining policies, procedures and regulations to the public, developers, business organizations, contractors, architects, etc.; preparing reports for public review, internal use or review by outside organizations, including graphics and mapping, to describe projects and program goals or activities; coordinating with other departments and agencies; making recommendations and developing and implementing ordinances; performing site visits and/or field inspections to gather data as part of development review process; attending scheduled day and evening meetings and taking an active role in meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; preparing reviews, updates, and amendments to ordinances; administering the zoning regulations; keeping immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress; working in the Emergency Operations Center when activated; and performing other directly job related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education - Bachelor's Degree in Urban or Community Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or related field. Minimum Qualification - Two or more years of directly related work experience in a coastal community, OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Urban or Community Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or related field, supplemented with at least two years of directly related experience in a coastal community. The successful applicant must be a Member of American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or become certified within an agreed upon time frame based on APA requirements. Must have the ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering designs/site plans and specifications and apply zoning regulations to those plans.

A valid SC Driver's License is required. The applicant selected must complete the FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) courses required to work in the Emergency Operations Center. Must be skilled in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), PDF document editing software, such as Bluebeam, FoxIt, Adobe, etc., and use software appropriate to assigned tasks

The ability to perform work with speed, accuracy, and attention to detail while effectively communicating with coworkers, supervisors, and the public is essential.
