Job description

Summary

Equipment Operator Apprentice, under the general supervision of the Streets Services Foreman, operates various equipment for street and alley reconstruction and supports multiple crews including Sign Maintenance and R.O.W. (traffic counts and pavement markings).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reconstruction Crew

  • Operates various trucks: dump truck, backhoe, loader, roller, etc. while performing tasks related to street reconstruction and maintenance of City streets, alleys, drainages, rights-of-way, and other property
  • Hauls dirt, road base, asphalt, water, pipes, equipment, debris, and other materials used
  • Uses hand tools and equipment for tasks associated such as shoveling, hammering, and picking
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment

Right of Way (R.O.W) Crew

  • Assists in responding to various service calls, including drainage and storm drain obstructions, traffic hazards, debris in the street, overhanging tree limbs, obstructed views from high grass, mud or silt buildup, alley repairs, fallen or vandalized signs, street sweeping, sanding during ice or snow, and placing barricades during flooding
  • Assists with the installation and maintenance of pavement markings in the city, in accordance with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TXMUTCD)
  • Mows and cleans alley ways and right of ways utilizing weed trimmers, lawn mowers, chainsaws and any other related equipment needed
  • Assists setting out traffic counters for annual traffic counts, traffic signal warrant studies, stop warrant studies and traffic analysis
  • Assists Tree Crew with the trimming and cutting of trees and bushes
  • Assists Sign Crew with the construction, installation of signs and constructing /painting barricades

Sign Crew

  • Constructs, installs, replaces street and traffic signs
  • Constructs and paints barricades; strip and/or reface used sign blanks
  • Checks, cleans, and maintains equipment
  • Sets up cones and barricades, flags traffic, and assists with traffic counts
  • Trims tree limbs from signs; removes broken tree limbs from streets

Forestry Crew

  • Assists crew in trimming and cutting trees along City streets and alleys, drives to check trees along streets and alleys, checks drainages for stoppage, and makes decisions pertaining to necessary cutting and trimming
  • Contacts the public concerning what is allowable and necessary to cut and trim
  • Assists a crew to chip tree limbs and brush or to load them on a dump truck
  • Directs and assists a crew to cut and clear trees, brush and vines from drainages and creeks
  • Takes on leadership role in absence of Crew Leader
  • Assists other crews and performs any miscellaneous duties needed
  • Rotates on-call nights and weekends for any emergency calls coming into the Transportation Dept

All Crew Member – Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works in emergency situations with sanding, oil spills, frozen streets, etc.
  • Assists other crews in the performance of duties as needed
  • Rotates on-call for nights, weekends, and emergency calls
  • Follows policies, procedures, safety guidelines and inspections of equipment and tools
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Certificates and Licenses

  • Class A CDL permit or the ability to obtain within six (6) months
  • Flagger Training within six (6) months
