Commission Backend Web Developer information

Is AI replacing web devs?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain tasks in web development, such as code generation and testing, but they do not replace the need for skilled backend web developers. Developers are required to design, implement, and maintain complex systems, which currently require human expertise, problem-solving, and understanding of user needs. Proficiency in programming languages, frameworks, and problem-solving remains essential for backend web developers.

How much does it cost to hire a back-end developer?

Hiring a backend web developer typically costs between $50,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Freelance or contract developers may charge hourly rates ranging from $30 to $150, influenced by skill level and technology expertise such as database management and server-side programming.

What is the difference between Commission Backend Web Developer vs Frontend Web Developer?

Both roles often collaborate but require different skill sets and tools, making them distinct yet complementary positions in web development teams.

Is backend developer still in demand?

Backend developers remain in high demand as businesses continue to rely on server-side programming, APIs, and database management. Skills in languages like Java, Python, and frameworks such as Node.js are especially sought after, and experience with cloud services and security enhances job prospects.

Who is paid more, frontend or backend?

In general, backend web developers tend to earn higher salaries than frontend developers due to the complexity of server-side programming, database management, and system architecture. However, salaries can vary based on experience, location, and specific skills such as knowledge of frameworks or cloud services. Both roles are essential, and compensation depends on the demand for skills and the company's size and industry.

Job description

E-Commerce Backend Software Developer

Rooms To Go is looking for a backend software developer to help build and scale our eCommerce platform. You will design and develop Node.js services and APIs, collaborate closely with front-end engineers (React), and ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and performant at high traffic volumes.

This role also requires practical, hands-on use of modern AI tools in day-to-day development. You will use AI to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and support troubleshooting and analysis while maintaining strong engineering judgment, sound security practices, and high standards for maintainability.

What you will do

  • Build and scale high-performance backend services and APIs (REST and service-to-service integrations) that power core eCommerce workflows (catalog/search, pricing/promotions, cart/checkout, orders, identity) with strong performance and reliability across services, databases, and integrations.
  • Collaborate with front-end developers to define contracts, improve end-to-end performance, and deliver smooth user experiences.
  • Implement security best practices including authentication/authorization, secrets management, secure coding, and data protection.
  • Write clean, testable, reusable code with strong observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and production readiness.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to accelerate delivery and improve quality (scaffolding/refactoring, test creation, troubleshooting, documentation), while validating and revising AI-generated output for correctness, security, and maintainability.
  • Apply secure usage practices for AI tools, including avoiding sensitive data exposure and following internal guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and participate in an on-call / after-hours support as needed.
  • Partner with data and analytics teams as needed, including supporting ETL/data pipelines and analytics-oriented backend integrations.

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • 4+ years of professional backend development experience with Node.js.
  • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript skills and experience building scalable APIs.
  • Experience with MERN stack development and close collaboration with React front-end teams.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (design, queries, indexing, performance tuning).
  • Experience building and integrating services in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Working knowledge of security practices for web applications and APIs (OAuth/JWT, OWASP concepts, encryption, etc.).
  • Experience with automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Comfortable working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with clear written and verbal communication.
  • Proven experience using AI-assisted development tools in daily work (for example, coding assistants, LLM-based troubleshooting, test generation, and documentation drafting).
  • Ability to integrate AI tools into an engineering workflow while maintaining rigorous code review and testing standards.
