Job description

Robertson Media Center Consultants are held to the highest standards of customer service.Potential employees with a foundation of knowledge about basic computer hardware and specialized video, audio, 3D, Virtual Reality and/or Augmented Reality will be given preference.Previous experience in customer service isgreatlyappreciated. Our patron use is currently heavily video and audio creation based, so expertise in the Adobe Creative Suite, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Garageband, Audacity, and/or similar software is appreciated.Willingness to learn hardware and software, including 3D printing, VR, and 3D modeling/animation software is preferred.

Consultants are responsible for checking out multi-piece equipment to patrons, consulting with faculty, staff, and students about what equipment and software will best complete their projects, alongside supporting them in the use of said software and equipment.We have several specialized spaces for media creation and consultants will also need to be familiar with these areas to assist patrons as needed.Please notethat this position is not your average library student position and our hourly rate is commensurate with for the diligence, professionalism, and hard work we expect from our consultants.

Hours & Tasks

On average consultants receive 7-10 assigned hours per week and we work with a system where co-workers will drop their shifts and you can augment your assigned hours by picking up those shifts.Shifts are usually 2 hour blocks where you, and at times a co-worker, are responsible for greeting, consulting with and aiding patrons that approach one our desks. While you are not expected to know everything about each piece of equipment, space, or software, you should have a well-rounded base of knowledge and be familiar enough with the landscape of our library to know where to get the assistance needed. The core components of the job are great customer service, a natural ambition to learn & follow instructions, and knowing how to effectively Google search.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Current undergrad UVA student
Experience: None
Licensure: None

Preferred Requirements: Ideal candidates will have expertise in any, several, or all of the following (related expertise is considered as well):

  • Media Creation: Including Video Equipment, Cameras, Tripods, Lighting Equipment

  • Video Editing Software: Including iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve

  • Audio Equipment: Including USB Microphones, XLR Mics, Wireless Lavaliers, Recording Studio Hardware, Midi Instruments

  • Audio Recording & Editing Software: Including Garageband, Logic, Audacity, Reaper

  • 3D Data Processing: 3D Modeling, 3D Printing (Makerbot Replicator+, Ultimaker 3, & Taz 6 are a plus), 3D Slicing Software (Cura & Makerbot Print are a plus)

  • Virtual & Augmented Reality: Oculus Hardware, HTC Vive Hardware, Valve Index, Virtual & Augmented Reality Development, Neos VR, Unity, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
